PIAKO RIVER CROSSING.

FERRY AT PIPIROA PROPOSED.

ESTIMATES FOR. A BRIDGE.. A proposal tp instal a ferry on the Pinko River at PTplroa was made to the Hauraki Plains' County Council , at its meeting on Monday in a letter from Mr W. White, Thames., who offered to subscribe £125 immediately , towards it, the amount to be taken ' out in ferry fees when the ferry is 1 completed. The letter explained that the people from Shelly Beach, Pipiroa, a,nd Waitakaruru had asked the writer to start a bus service between those places, and the best way to please all settlerjs would be to put a ferry across the Piako River, in front of the store at Pipirtoa.

Cn Harris said it was very necessary that they should do something. He was in favour of; the Council doing something in the matter of getting a ferry at Pipiroa . He understood that the Pipiroa and Waitakaruru mail would be sent that way if a ferry was established and a bus service run. It would be a very important link. He urged that a committee go thoroughly into the matter. A Councillor : What would it cost ? Cr. Harris : Every bit of £lOOO. A Councillor: That would mean a special rating area. Cr. McLoughlin : What about taking a county punt ?

Cr. Hayward said the movement should come from those directly interested, If there was no rating •area they would hot know where the money was coming from. If the settlers were willing to make a rating area there should be no objection. Cr. Parfitt moved that Mr White be informed that the Council would consider his offer when a ferry was built at Pipiroa. The motion was seconded and carried.

Cr. Parfitt thought the engineer should get out estimates for a ferry. They should also apply to the Lands Department for a further grant so that a concrete bridge could be erected.

The engineer was instructed to obtain estimates for a "ferry at Pipiroa. Cr. Parfitt moved that the Public Works Department be asked to furnish plans for a bridge at Pipiroa in Wood and concrete. Cr. Harris Seconded the motion, which was carried.
