THAMES COUNTY COUNCIL

THE MONTHLY MEETING. A ROADING SCHEME. Tiie Thames County Council .held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, the following attending : Councillors H. Lowe (chairman), J. McCormick, A. Alley, W. Brunton, C. R. Blackett, b’ Cox, and P. Faithfull. An apology was received on behalf o£ Cr. Niccpl.

Approval was received from the Minister of Public Works for a £ for £ subsidy up to £2OOO towards the Th.a'mes-Hikutaia Road. The chairmap said the clerk and he had interviewed the Minister of Public Works at Wellington. The Minister had agreed 10 give £2OOO on a £ for £ basis. When the Main Highways Bill" came into force this road would be the first one to receive at ■ tention. The thanks ofl the Council were due to the Minister for the kind and courteous way he had received the deputation. He would also like to express his thanks and appreciation for the help of the member for the district for the way he had treated the deputation.

Cr. Fait'hfull moved that the matter of road construction be placed in the hands ofj Mr Powell. Votes of thanks were passed to the Minister and the member for, the district.

The chairman said they were in the position to start with the road scheme as soon as it was' approved. Machinery and material was at pre* sent lying idle. i They would most likely start from the southern boundary. TAIRUA FACTORY. The Tairua Co-operative Dairy Co. extended an invitation to the Council to attend the opening of the butter factory on the 14th inst.'—The invitation was accepted. CROSBIE’S TRACK. The Minister of Public Works prom ised to give every consideration to a request for a deviation of Crosibe’s Settlement track and its Continuation. WHANGAMATA WHARF. The Public Works Department,Auckland, advised that it was not considered advisable tp go in for further wharf; construction at Whangamata on account of the drifting sand problem, and suggested that the matter might be met by the construction of a suitable punt. If this was decided upon the question of nesponsibi’ldty would have to be carefully considered and pub on a sound basis. The clerk said the settlers did not consider the punt proposal to be sat-i isfactory. and they might find it necessary to depart froij) the Department’s -suggestions. The matter was to be considered by the Settlers’ Association.

HEALTH INSPECTOR’S SALARY. The Health Department advised that the Council’s subsidy towards the expenses of the departmental inspector had been Increased from £3O to £4B a ye,ar, apd suggested that the increased rate should date from July 1 last.

The chairman said that if the sanitation of the Coast ■settlements was ngt attended to they might, instead offing health resorts, be the centre of-an epidemic. They had an energetic health officer in the district, and they could not blame the local inspector for lack of enthusiasm in connection with the health of the district. While they did not object to voting an additional £lB to Mr Franklin, they did object to making . that grant to the Health. Department. It was decided to inquire why the additional amount was required from the Council, MISCELLANEOUS. Mr W. T. Onion, Parawai, stated that the removal of the present bridge would entail his having to cart material from his works about 4' miles further and would ruin his business- in which he had been for nine years.—Received. The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that steps would be taken to have a. warrant prepared for the issue of a title in connection with the Conn:-' cil.'s purchase of a portion of the Te Auaunga block at Parawai. Mr R. B. Hudson, Kopu, wrote requesting the Council to authorise the Spreading pf a few loads of metal on Mill .Street, Kopu—lt was decided to accept an offer made by Mr Hudson.
