WORKS IN THE COUNTY.

ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The Ohinemurj County Council engineer’s (Mr E. Shaw) report for the month was read as follow’s at the county meeting on Thursday:— Work was laid off and plains and specifications sent for approval for the erection of two small platform bridges, metalling, draining, and general repairs to Waihi-Whangamata Road,, and also for forming .17% chains of 10ft road, being access to section 30, C. Franklin’s, Waitawheta. The same have been returned, approved, for which, along with metalling portion of Paeroa-T'e Aroha Road, tenders are called and dose at 2 p.m. this day,

S. Merry’s contract 'for the erection of two platform bridges on the WaihiWhangamata Road has been completed, and now awaits' inspection by the Public Works Department before the final payment. The Ratarua bridge that was swept away with the flood three years ago has been placed again in position an.l securely fastened tp a concrete bed. As this bridge is severely tested by each flood, I am placing for its safety in the future one inch tie-rod to each pier and anchoring to the rock.

The roller has been hired put by the Public Works Department for a few days, scarifying the metal on Mill Road for removal Where the approaches are being made to raise the road over the proposed flood-gate and. stop-bank.

The grader has had a thorough overhaul and has been painted., and is now ready for the roadRe the headworks of the Paeroa water supply : The dam has again developed several leaks, and it will be necessary to have them stopped. I intend having this work done without delay. The old reservior has been cleaned out and refilled so as to keep the supply going while tlhe repair work is in progress. The Natives who were gum-digging in the vicinr ity of the watershed area I found it necessary tp have them removed owing to their setting fires within that area.

On the 9th ultimo, in cpmpany with the chairman and Cr. Cprbett, I paid a visit, to Waihi and met the committee appointed by the Waihi Borough to discuss the Waihi Beach Road. No doubt the outcome of the conference will be laid before you by the chairman.
