KEREPEEHI.

QUICK MARCH. That Kerepeehi has awakened to the fact that she is ably capable of conducting affairs both socially and financially is very evident to all those pleasure-seekers l who gathered together at the recent. Hospital Site Ball held in the hall at Kerepeehi. This fact is made even more apparent when they compare their evening's enjoyment with the balancesheet of the same 'function. This important statement shows the gross takings as £45 ss, with a nett credit balance of £27 8s 9d—a very creditable performance indeed for one night's entertainment. Great credit, therefore is due to Mr J. M. Thompson, the organiser, and all tihose willing workers who so readily came forward tp assist, and the old proverb, “Many hands make light work,” was very much in evidence ,and the genial atmosphere that prevailed made work a pleasure.

Special praise is due to all those Thames patrons who rallied together in such numbers, thereby assisting to make the ball the success it was. At. least seventy people must have availed themselves of the free launch Mr H. Kerby sb kindly donated. Kerepeehi is indeed fortunate in having among her recent arrivals Mr G. Barnbrpok. All those admirers of his many posters consider him “some” artist. It was also due tp his energies and skill that the hall presented sudh a pleasant appearance, having the benefit, of several extra electric lights.

One fact that was commented on by several, and was very much in evidence. is that the present hall is not large enough, nor is it suitable, for the growing needs ofl the district. The public, although conscious of the fact that the present hall has not the conveniences phey would like it to contain, are powerless to act, as the hajl is a privately-bwned one. Therefor’e the need, for a public hall is a very, real and urgent one. It has been officially advertised that the residents of Kerepeehi have purchased the Public Hall site set aside by the Government when surveying Kerepeehi into a township. For the benefit of the public, the position - of this site is adjacent to and overlooking the Agricultural and Pastoral Asso-ciation’s-show ground. The force of this movement, then, can readily be seen by a 11.., it being a recognised fact that the home 'of the A. and P. show is at Kerepeehi, and that the same will be held on the home ground the show following .the present one in course of preparation. Therefore a public hall. in the abovementioned position could accommodate all the home industry portion of the show. The' residents of Kerepeehi are to be complimented on this forward move, They apparently realise what a powerful means of raising funds a public hall is; that is, in the hands of a solid and energetic social committee. Together with the running of a picture plant of their own they would very quickly pay for the hall and plant 'They then have at their command a ready means oif raising funds for other needy public causes. The position with regard to this; all important question is: A strong committee has been set up - to go thoroughly into the matter, getting outside quotations to ascertain wlhat the present hall would cost, with the additions the committee consider necessary ; this has then to be compared with the cost of a new hall (built with voluntary labour) filling the requirements of the district. The whole matter is then submitted to a public meeting to discuss and decide whiq'h is the better proposition. > The Tennis Club tihs year promises to \be a very strong one, something like thirty members so far having enrolled, while several more have promised to join. The recently-formed court will therefore be a very valuable asset to the dub. In this direction, also, Kerepeehi is on the movp, instituting inquiries with reference to ti'he domain the Government has set aside. It is the intention pf the club, with the assistance of the residents, to make a istart in the near future to lay this “valuable asset to the district” out in suitable tennis courts, bowling green, and gardens. With the approach of summer and the warmer evenings Kerepeehi ts how turning its attention tp the forming pf a concert, the proceeds from which will go towards the public hall building fund. The newly farmed soc'al committee have decided to devote their full energies to making this' function a huge success, and it is hoped the general public will roll along in the car,s and traps, etc., with the full knowledge that they are going to enjoy a good night’s entertainment, and while doing sb they have the satisfaction of knowing that they are assisting a “real live cause.” In conclusion, a person with an imaginative turn of mind can almost: picture the newly transformed Kerepeehi with arms linked sauntering down the main road, rollicking from side to side and singing “And we’H roll the old chariot along.”
