HIKUTAIA NOTES.

ACCIDENT,. His many friends, will regret to learn that as the result of an accident that befell him some time ago there is every possibility of Mr Isaac Wade iosing one of his eyes. While preparing a hole for a shot, in the Maratoto mine, the property pf the Ohinemuri Gold and Silver Mining Co., the drill, which evidently met some especially hard substapce, rebounded, the end ‘striking Mr. Wade in the eye. After medical treatment the sight seemed to become normal; but later on a visit to a specialist became necessary. A diagnosis evoked the opinion that there was little, if any, hope of saving the injured optic, the patient being ordered to return soon in order to have the eye taken out. HARD-UP SOCIAL.

A successful habd-up social in aid of the hall funds took place pn Thursday night, 24th inst. Though highly enjoyable, the attendance was not so large as it has been at functions organised for the same cause. Mr Fisher provided capital music, while the floor, was .in excellent order, ample justice being done to the dainty supper purveyed by the ladies. The prizes for the best costume were won by Mrs Brown and Mr Ted Samson, Miss Samson and Mr C, Alley being awarded second place. The prizes in the euchre competition were annexed by Mr Alf. Alley and Mrs Walker. PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL. Final arrangements fop the plain and fancy dress ball which will be held in the hall on the evening of the 2nd were made by the committee at, a meeting held on Friday night, Mr M. C. Smith- presiding. Great enthusiasm is being shown, and there is every indication of .a big turnout, a large number pf visitors from Thames, Paeroa, and other places having signified their intention pf being present. Owing to tjie low pries of the tickets and to the large expenditure contemplated in the effort to ensure a social success the hopes of the bowling club, by whose members the ball is being organised, are at zero. , RAIN.. For the pastoralists the present season .has proved exceptionally g'opd, as far as weather is concerned, the copious showers of Saturday and Sunday coming just as if they had been ordered from a complaisant Jupiter Pluvius. The country is beautifully green and the grpwth of the grass highly luxuriant. .

POSTAL. The assistant postmaster at Thames visited Hikutaia on Monday to see, whether postal facilities cculd be so extended that the chief inward mail might arrive about 11 .a.ni. instead of at 4 p.m, as at present. An arrangement of the kind will prove very valuable, as it will enable letters to be answered and mailed on the day of their receipt. To effect the change it will be necessary that a special bag for Hikutaia be made up at the railway post office at Frankton June-,, ti'on. The arrangement will also enable the officials to observe Saturday afternoon as their weekly day without unduly inconveniencing the public. BOWLING CLUB. At a meeting of the Bowling Club Committee held last Friday evening Mr A. W., Alley, the president, in the chair, it was decided, the inquiries to be made by the secretary proving satisfactory, to instal an eletcric pumping plant for the purpose of . flooding the green when necessary, and to alter the pavilion so that it will consist of two rooms, rather than of the one shown in the plan. The engineer to the Power Board, having visited the Alley Memorial Park, where he familiarised himself with the conditions obtaining, will be enabled, it is thought, to put the club on the right lines —a thing he could hot do without a personal knowledge of the ground.
