' A meeting of the Paeroa branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held yesterday, when it was decided that collectors should canvass Paeroa and surrounding districts during the month of November for support for this’ most worthy object.
Mr Howard Hare announces that, at the request of a large number of ratepayers in the Nethetrpn riding, he has- consented to become a candidate for the vacancy on the Hauraki Plains County Council.
Tenders are invited by the Ohinemuri County Council for three contracts, particulars of which are advertised.
The members of St. Paul’s Ladies’ Guild have arrangements well jn hand for their annual sale of work, which is to be held, in the Central Theatre on the 16th of next month. The guild has been hard at work flor some time past' preparing many useful articles, and judging by the enthusiasm shown and the amount of work nearing completion a very successful sale is anticipated.
The fact that the name of Mr D. Donaldson, Mayor o£ Waihi, has been included in the published lists of probable candidates f.or the forthcoming Parliamentary elections as a contestant for the Ohinemuri seat, induced a representative of the Daily Telegraph to interview that gentleman on the matter. The Mayor intimated that so far he had made no decision on the question as to his candidature or his party,
Mrjs A. Bentley, dressmaker and outfitter, has an announcement to the effect that she is now prepared to take orders for dressmaking in all branches at moderate fees. A full stock of ladies’ and children’s clothing is to be opened up on November 10. Her place of business is in the Criterion Buildings.
"The biggest ‘mug’ in the world can get a following, especially if he’s got the ‘gift of the gab,’ ” said Mr A. R. Vowles, when speaking in the debate on the Kirikiri bridge at Ngatea last evening. He added that even he could get a few to vote for him. (Laughter.) ■The Methodist Church by advertisement in this issue reminds the public that the church service will be Weld in the Central Theatre on Sunday evening next at 7 o'clock, when the Rev. W. J. Entlcott will preach. A special song service will be held, when the choir will contribute the anthem which recently won the honours in Hamilton, and also the test hymn. Messrs Foster (2) will sing the winning solos. The public are cordially invited to attend.
The attention of our readers is directed to an advertisement appearing in this issue pertaining to Mrs W. Bain's Empire Tea Rooms.
Apparently there are to be rival seaside townships at the Waihi Beach, Mrs M. D. Shaw having prepared a scheme for the subdivision of a portion of 'her beach property, near the extreme north eastern corner of the Tauranga County boundary, into building sites. This provides for enghty allotments, the majority being of 15 perches, and a plan was before the Tauranga County Council recently. The opinion was then expressed by the councillors that the proposed areas were too small, and the matter was referred to a committee for a report.—Daily Telegraph.
