HIKUTAIA NOTES.

Mr A. H. Rush, physical instructor to the Auckland Board of Education, visited the Hikutaia school on Wednesday last, when he took the various classes in the physical exercises they had done, and introduced some new “roganised" games- He complimented the pupils on their improved physique and drill, and paid them a special compliment on their clean teeth—a state of things, he said, that spoke/volumes In favour of the toothbrush drill that was Inaugurated shortly after his last visit.

The cattle sale on Wednesday and the horse fair on Thursday were well attended. With brisk bidding and a large yarding good business’ was flpne, though the prices, which showed an upward tendency, were by no means phenomenal- Anything good brought ■its full value; anything, doubtful or poor was either rejected or bought for little money. The horses were numerous, and sold well, the prices, as’one owner expressed it, being “decidedly catchy.” Messrs Biggs and Macgregor, of the Forestry Department, have been in the district for. the past ten days’, measuring, inspecting, and valuing the milling and other timber in the locality in the interests of their department. Both gentlemen left for Auckland by the Thames express on Friday,

Sporadic attacks of measles are being continuously reported, while influenza and bad colds are prevalent. It is stated tjiat in the district is one case of pneumohic influenza, the sufferer from which is now approaching convalescenc®.

Settlers will be glad to hear that as' formerly the post office will be open on Saturday afternoons for the delivery of letters. Local bowlers who were present at the opening of the Paeroa and Thames greens are loud In their praises of the lavish hospitality of which they were the recipients.
