STATEMENT presented
local districts expenditure. The Hop. J- G. Coates, Minister) of Public Works', presented to the House o f parliament last night his Public Works Statement. It is a voluminous document, and shows that the total /expenditure on railway, hydroelectric, road, bridge,, and irrigation constructions during the past financial yean has passed all previous records in the history of the Dominion. Speaking of the East Coast line—■‘’Rpuranga eastwards —good progress has been made; while on the westwards section, between Tauranga and katikati, the Department is pushing ahead with the preparation of plans for work to enable the isolated section of over 40' miles from Tauranga eastward to be connected up with the general Working Railways; system. It is intended to invite tenders for the construction of this twenty-two miles section and to have the work ‘completed and through communication established with, the least possible delay. ■ The total expenditure under all votes and accounts for the financial year ended on March 3JL, 1922, was £6,922,039.
The report is too comprehensive to give in detail, but a short review of works' near at hand is given.
RIVERS IMPROVEMENT ACCOUNT. The amount expended on the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers Improvement account is £54,379.. making a total expenditure to date of £243,453. The amount on this year’s estimates is £60,000. Upper Waihou (Mangaiti-Tirohia Section).—Both banks have been cleared of willows to Tirohja bridge, a total length of 4% miles. The formation of the preliminary left bank stop-bank is in hand from 3 miles 42 chains to 5 miles.
Tirohia-Ngararahi.—The - stop-bank on left side has been completed, partly to preliminary and partly to final 'levels, over its whole length of 4% miles.
On the right bank final level has been reached (with, the exception of one small gap at Mill Road) for a distance of approximately two miles. The suction dredge pumped 127,000 cubic yards of sand into this bank since August 12 last.
Ngahina-zWaimarie Bend.— Bxcept for temporary drainage gaps preliminary levels have been reached with tihle stop-banks on either side of the river. Cut-off drains on the right bank have been completed, and those on the left bank are in hand. - Waimarae . BCnd-WharepOa—About 1% miles’ of stop-bank on each, side of! the river has reached preliminary levels. Flood-gates have been erected;. and a mile of willows ring-barked-
Ngahina Bridge Extension.—The stop-bank on the left bank of this river was commenced last May.. EAST COAST RAILWAY.
Athenree Section.—Formation is practically complete. Several cuttings and banks hiave been completed. Athenree station-yard has been widened, and filling around abutment “A" of Mangatoetoe bridge is in hand. Seven bridges are in various stages of construction. Adams Street, subway is well advanced, and subway at 8 miles: 62 chains has been completed. Katikati Section. —Formation, culvert building, line clearing, and fencing have proceeded steadily along several miles of this section. Permanent survey has been completed to the Wa’.hoa River, and plans are) m course of preparation.
