PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE, The usual monthly meeting of the above was held in the sc.liool on Saturday evening last. Present: Messrs W. H. Taylor (chairman), B. E. Veale, A. J. Garry, E. E. Gillman, C. Cane, C. Pascoe, W. Power, N. C. Busby, W. Redfern, and the secretary and treasurer, Mr W. L. Lawrence. Mr G. H. Taylor, headmaster, was also in attendance. STAFF. Advice was received from the Education Board that Miss E. G. B. Whit-, ten had been appointed jo the teaching staff,, and would take up her duties as from the 9th inst. Mrs J. Kenny, pf Tirohia. was appointed sewing mistress at the Tirohia school until the end of the year, when fresh applications for the position would again be called. SCHOOL DISTRICTS. The Board advised that in accordance with the committee’s and Inspector’s recommendations, authority was granted for the constitution of a separate school district for Tirohia as from April, 1923. At the present time the Tirohia school is under the jurisdiction of the local High School Committee, of which Mr B. E. Veale is the member representing Tirohia. BOARD'S SUBSIDY. The Education Board advised that a subsidy of £ for £ on contributions amounting to about £122 -had been authorised for expenditure on improvements at the scjiopl grounds. This amount lias already been earmarked by the Committee to carry our. many much-desired improvements, and the works will be put in hand immediately.
DONATION TO FIRE BRIGADE. The Education Board approved of the Committee’s recommendation that a donation of £5 towards the cost ci maintenance and repairs be given the local fire brigade as a slight recognition of its services in preventing the spread of fire to the house in Wood Street, thereby avoiding considerable loss. DENTAL NURSES FOR SCHOOL. The Director of Dental Hygiene, Health Department, wrote thanking the Committee for its offer to provide transport facilities and accommodation for a dental nurse to visit Paeroa and Tirohia schools, and advising that such nurse would probably visit here after the Christmas vacation. SANITARY ARRANGEMENTS. With reference to the Committee's application for additional new latrines fpr the primary department the Board’s architect advised that he would go into the matter of drainage in connection with the proposed new latrines, which, howeveri, would have to be deferred until the beginning of the new year, when it would receive favourable consideration. SCHOOL BOUNDARY FENCE.. Owing to lack of sufficient funds the Committee has decided to abandon the idea of putting up a new boundary fence. Instead, tlie present one is to be repaired, and sucli material 'as is available is to be used with the addition of some extra wire. The present ga.te-posts in this fence are to be removed, and an entrance will be made pppesite the sheltershed.
FENCING DESTROYED BY FIRE. The back boundary fence at the headmaster’s residence is to be renovated, as also is the fencing on tne side boundary which was recently destroyed by fire. The Board has authorised a small sum to be expended on. the repair of this portion, and has pointed out that it is encumbent on the owner of the adjoining property from .whence the fire originated to pay Half the cost of the work. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £25 13s 2d were passed for payment, SCHOOL FURNITURE. The headmaster was authorised to purchase a. couch, for the infants room, it being pointed out that many of! these tiny tots. came a Long distance to school, some of whom rode behind elder children on horseback, and during the hot weather they undoubtedly felt the s,train during the day, and it was considered esirable that .some provision should be made for them to rest. GARDEN PLOTS. Paeroa School again carried off first honours in their grade for the best root crop at the Waikato Winter Show competition. Although no monetary prize is available this year the Board, has decided to award a special Certificate of Merit., . The Committee agreed that their appreciation of Mr S. Bishop’s services in this work pe recorded, and that he be heartily congratulated on the success gained, by his pupils. This is the second occasion the Paeroa School has carried off honours in this class.
PLAYGROUND. The Committee is to meet on the school ground at an early date to discuss various undertakings with a view to improving the playgrounds and tidy up generally. The following work will be proceeded with almost immediately : Levelling and excavation of portion of playground, fencing in of a larger horse paddock, and the installation of a horse drinking trough, enlargement of present saddle shed, and the disposal of old septic tank, and such other improvements that finances will permit. GRASS PLOTS. It was reported that those areas recently sown in grass were quite satisfactory, and a good ’ take” was assured. SEWERAGE WORK. The new sewerage connections have been completed and a concrete channel had been put in.- The, latter, however, had not set firmly, due to some foreign matter having got in. This matter was receiving attention. QUARTER’S ROLL NUMBER. The headmaster kindly supplied the roll number for the quarter ending September 30, 1922, as under: Primary, 214 boys, 174 girls; total average for quarter, 340.7. Secondary department, 22 boys, 33 girls: total average for quarter, 45.08.
