WORKS IN THE .BOROUGH
COMMITTEE REPORTS. The following reports were submitted to the Paerpa Borough Council at its meeting last night: WORKS COMMITTEE. “During the past month the staff have proceeded with the works authorised by the Council some time ago. Bush Street path is now completed, and the town end of Arney Street, including the domain entrance, has been considerably improved. Owing to the Beautifying Society’s activities at the railway station corner it has been necessary to move the water trough. This has been placed between Station Road and Seymour Street, near) Mr Rasmussen’s stable.
“Re the drains mentioned in the foreman’s report, these are in a bad state, and we recommend that they be cleaned at a cost not exceeding £l4.
“ In accordance with your instructions, the foreman has carried out a careful examination pf the fire plugs, and he states the result pf his inspection in his report. “During the month the Tirohia Quarry Co. offered to supply three trucks of metal- —one fine for footpaths, one - coarse tp fine, and one medium coarse to fine for macadam or potholes, oji the understanding' that should the metal be considered satisfactory an order would be placed. If on the other hand the metal was unsuitable no charge wpuld be made. Your, committee closed with this offer, and so far one truck of fines fpr footpaths has arrived.” FINANCE COMMITTEE.
"During the month the revenue has amounted to £179 17s Bd, and expenditure to £ll5 10s 4ld. Including tho attached accounts, which your committee recommends for payment, the balance of the District Fund account will amount to £783 5s 10d. The halfyearly statement of- receipts .and expenditure compared with the year s estimates is before you With regard to the expenditure, we consider that, taken on the whole, the figures arp quite satisfactory. It is very gratifying tp observe that during tlie half-year, just ended the District Fund account was never overdrawn, This is the first occasion s’nee the borough was formed that there has been no interest pn overdraft to meet.
“The rates and water charges are coming in very slowly just now, and we recommend that the ratepayers be notified through the press that unless their, water charges are paid on or before October 31 their water supply will be cut off forthwith. We also recommend that the town clerk be authorised to take the necessary steps to carry but the Council’s instructions oh the same lines as last year.”
FOREMAN’S REPORT. “During the past month the staff have been engaged in the repairing of footpaths and the cleaning of various drains and water-tables where required. Willoughby Street footpath, has been chipped and cleaned, and screenings spread oh same, and the footpath from Normanby Road to the factory has also been chipped and cleaned. A portion of Arney Street path has been chipped, and the water-table has been cleaned put. Screenings h,ave been spread on Bush Street and Kennedy Street footpaths. Station Road has been patched with metal in the worst places. .In regard to the footpath from 'Normanby Road to Willoughby Street, according to the permanent, levels plan of this portion of Arney Street, it will be necessary to dp a fair .amount of filling at one end and lowering of the other end. I have accordingly left this, work over until I receive further instructions from your committee. "1 have had the old motor speed boards taken down, and they are now being repainted. Regarding the fire plugs. I have inspected all pf these during the past month, and find there are twelve requiring iiew boards. I have had these boards made, and they are npw in the painter’s hahds. AU of the fire plugs are in good working order, but there are a good many with the old wooden covers. These are in a bad state of repair, and T would recommend that concrete ones 1 oe made and substituted in the places of the wooden ones. Twenty-five would be required at ap estimated cost of £1 each. “The drain from the gasworks bridge on the Puke Road to George Street off Ra’lway Street, and the ’one on the railway side of the same rpad, are in a bad state. I would recommend that the cleaning of these drains be undertaken, at an estimated cost of £l4.
“The work intended to be done during the ensuing month will include the repairing of Hughendoh Street path and the tarring and. sanding of the main street footapths, etc.” BUILDING COMMITTEE. “During the month an application was received from the Rev. Father Dunphy to carry out various alterations to the Roman Catholic school. This your committee granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws, and ask for your endorsement of their i action. “An application is before you tonight from Messrs Hayward Bros, to erect, a shop in William Street outside the brick area. A permit was issued to Mr Cullen in December last for, the erection of this shop, but the present application is somewhat different to the last. We recommend that the application be granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws-“An application from Mr Roberts has been referred back for further particulars and a plan.” The reports Were received.
