BOROUGH COUNCIL
OCTOBER MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of toe Paeroa Borough Council was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor, Mr P, E. Brehan, presided, and Councillors T. P. Vuglar, F. E. Flatt, GLamb, W. Marshall, D. Leach, J. W. Silcock, W. Bain, and E- Edwards were in attendance, as was also the town c.lerk, Mr P. C. Furley. APPEAL FOR FUNDS. An appeal fpr funds for the London Hospital by the Lord Mayor of London through Sir James Allen was received, and on the motion of the Mayor it was decided to commend ths appeal to the councillors, and that the town clerk be instructed to open lists for the purpose of receiving contributions to so worthy a cause, and that the press be asked to give due publicity to this resolution. RAWHITIROA BLOCK ROADING. The borough solicitor wrote explaining the system of reading which would be adopted through Rawhitiroa Block, and asking if the Council’s poticy was to have one only or the twb roads retained as public highways.
It was resolved that a final decision be deferred pending further information, and that the Borough solicitor be informed that it is the Council's desire tp keep open the road in continuation of Arney Street west-, ward. THAMES HARBOUR BILL.
A letter was received fro Mr H. Poland, M.P., in reply to one from the Council asking him to strenuously oppose the above Bill in the Council's interests. Mr Poland pointed out that the Bill only extends the boundaries of the harbour district, and does not increase the liability of Paeroa in any way.:—Received. CUTTING DRAINS.
L. D. Nathan, Ltd., wrote with reference to cutting -drains through the property in Paeroa owned jointly by them and Hancock and and Co., pointing out that they had .received no intimation of the Council’s intention or desire to do this work and asking what statutory powers the Council had for entering the premises and carrying out the work. This firm also stated that they did not wish to Object tp the work done, but were instructing their district representative to report on the position.—Received. COUNCIL CHAMBERS RENT. Messrs Miller and Son, solicitors-, of Thames, wrote asking the Council to consider the increase of rent to £1 per week as from November? 1, 1922. —Agreed to, subject to the offices being connected up with the new sewerage.
SEWERAGE CONTRACT PAYMENT.
A letter was received frpm Stanton, Johnstone, and Spence asking the Council to immediately pay the isum of £149 7s to J. S'. Anchor and Co. : , the borough sewerage contractors, this amount being due for certain extras, particulars of which have been supplied to the Council’s engineers, and pointing out that Mr Anchor agreed to make a reduction of £36, provided payment was made prior to the 18th ultimo.
It was decided to acknowledge the receipt of the letters and ask for a statement of claim, as the Council's engineer states that excess extras have been claimed for.
Messrs Lockie Gannon and Worley wrote in connection with the amount due to Anchor and Co., and stated that several differences occurred in the items shown and amounts claimed. —Received. TRUCK OF CHIPS. Messrs Ratliff and Son wrote advising the council that they had sent a truck of chips free of charge to make good a previous consignment which was adversely commented on by the borough foreman. They also advised that they would be able to forward five trucks of fine screenings at an early date, as ordered. —Received.
A letter from Tirohia Quarries i'e metal was also received. DRAIN IN RYE LANE.
J. Bertelsen wrote stating that if the Council was prepared to clean the drain from Rye Lane to the bridge at Quarry Road he would he agreeable to contribute one-third of the cost as far as his property extended on both sides of the drain and half the one-third cost for the rest of the way up to the bridge at Quarry Road. The Council thought the application reasonable, and referred it to the Works Committee, with power to act. INSURANCE RATES,
The Fire Underwriters’ Association of New Zealand wrote in connection with the reclassification of New Zealand towns for insurance’ purposes. The fire insurance companies and State Fire Office had decided that certain improvements in fire brigades were necessary to justify the continuance of the present classification of Paeroa. The improvements asked for were that the standard of the brigade should be. raised by a provision for sleeping accomm'oflatlon for pne or more men, and direct communication with .the fire station by telephone, such to be to the satisfaction of the advisory expert of the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand. The letter also pointed out that the present grading of Paeroa was conditional on the continuance of the present municipal and volunteer control of the brigade. It was decided to write to the Fire Underwriters’ Association and ascertain particulars as to classification of towns, and also what was necessary to raise Paeroa tp the first grade of classification. ADVANCE ON LOAN. The State Advances Office advised that £2OOO had been remitted on account pf the loan of £5OOO granted by that office for the purpose of the Bororough Council Sewerage Loan.-—Re-ceived.
A telegram was received from Mr H. Poland, M.P., in notifying the advance of £2OO on the loan account.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL BUILDING. Father Dunphy applied for permission remove the school building from it’s present site to one forward of the presbytery and tp make some alterations and additions to an extent
of approximately £3oo!.i—Granted. BUILDING PERMIT.
Hayward Bros, applied for a building permit to erect a building in|No. 2 area in William Street, Paeroa* for Mr W. M. Cullen at an estimated cost. Qf £385, and attached particulars and plans.—Granted, subject to by-laws being complied with. DOMAIN BOARD.
USE OF DOMAIN. The secretary of the Paeroa Crpquet Club wrote inquiring as to when the lawns would be ready for play, and what would be the nehtaL The Paeroa Cricket Club applied for permission tp use the Domain ground for ’the coming season, and asked what rental would be charged. The letter pointed put .that the club was the youngest sports body in Paeroa, and asked that the rent be as low as possible. The Paeroa Tennis Club applied for the use of the tennis courts for the coming season, and pointed put that the courts were badly in need of fresn tarring and sanding. The applications were granted.
DOMAIN CARETAKER’S REPORT.
“Since my last report J. have been engaged in the usual maintenance work and the preparing of the greens and lawns fpr the coming season. AH the hedges have been cut, and the pampas bushes have been cut back. Blackberries have been grubbed out, and the bushes and trees trimmed up generally. “For .the past few weeks I have been busy preparing the greens, and from now on is the busiest time of the year for me. While I have been busy with the greens I have had to let other .work go, but now that the greens are in order I will have more time to devote tp general work, such as cleaning of the paths and mowing grass.
“Next year I hope to be able tp remove* several trees that have outgrown themselves, and to improve things generally. “The following hours were spent on bowling greens, croquet lawns, and general for the quarter ending September 30, 1922: Bowls Croquet General
