DISEASES IN CATTLE.

POSITION ON THE PLAINS,

There was never a district which required a veterinarian more than the Hauraki Plains, though the mortality amongst the stock is no higher than tfhija.'t in any other district. There was no other time when the services of a veterniary surgeon were required more than at the present. - This was the opinion of Mr J. Costello when interviewed by a "Gazette” rer porter at the latter end of last week. With respect to his work with the Farmers’ Veterinary Club Mr Costello said he was getting into line with most of the prevalent troubles, whicn with judicious treatment he expected to bring down to a minimum. The veterinary ; club is ap oragnisatipn for which its members would be well repaid. The inauguration of these clubs was one of the greatest signs of progress. The prevalent s’ckness, Mr Costello finds, is metritis, but so far there have been no losses.

Stressing the heed for a fresh water supply on the Hauraki’Plains Mr Costello said that the treatment of the diseases - becomes more complicated here than elsewhere owing to the acidity of the water, but that, he said, was on the improve. There is much less disease in Kaihere and portions of Waitakaruru districts, where there was ,a supply of fresh water. Where the fresh water is the troubles are fewer. The increase in prpducticn would be 50 per cent to 60 per oenr. with a fresh water supply. The rejuvenation and treatment is slower than where there is a good circulation of fresh water. ' When the organisation is completed in the district they will find in the future that it is the foundation of

very high and efficient conditions.
