PLAINS BRIDGE POLICY.

REPLY TO CRITICISM. “BALKANS OF THE COUNTY.” The recent persistent criticism of the Haur.aki Plains County Council’s bridge policy called forth a little- comment from - councillors at yesterday’s special meeting of the council. Cr. Mayn regarded with disf.avour the lone of the recent meetings of ratepayers at Turua and Netherton. “Turua and NethertoYi,” 'hes aid, are the Balkans of the County. They may think they are making, history, but they are quibbling about nothing. As far as Turua was concerned, Turua deputations 'had asked that ratepayers’ money be spent on the roads when only a small amount was available, The Turua people l;ad turned the loads scheme down. Turua did not want roads ; they wanted agitation. Anything they had said against the Council had nothing substantial to back it up. The same thing applied to Netherton. He could not understand their action in trying to get back to Ohinemuri County. “The Netherton people,” continued Cr. Mayn, “say they do not know where their credit has gone to. Every dunce in the county should know where it has gone to. They also appear to think that the clerk has not rendered them a proper aecqjint.” The Clerk (Mr Walton) : One manCr. Mayn maintained that when the statement of accounts is put before the Netherton people they will be found to be in the wrong aagin. It was for the ratepayers, if they wanted good roads, to form themselves into rating areas. 1 The chairman (Mr Miller) did not think it was the policy of the Council the ratepayers were up against, but it was just to be “agin the government." Cr. Harris said it was unfortunate for the district. . Cr. Mayn thought Mr Simpson’s remarks at the last Netherton meeting were the most logical.
