THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1922 LOCAL AND GENERAL.

« Tn spite of the fact that the news concerning the grave trouble in the Near East shows a decided improvement recruits are still readily coming forward to register their names for service. The .total names registered at the local Defence office, including telegraphic returns of enlistments from areas outside pf Paeroa, but which come under the jurisdiction of the local Defence office, how number 34 officers and 656 N.CjO.’s and men. Included in these figures are a large number of returned soldiers. The application for the erectiop of a district high school at Ngatea has been deferred by the Auckland Education Board, on the senior inspector’s recommendation, until settlement is more established. The Borough Council appears to be having a spring-cleaning, as far as some of the streets are concerned. On the Domain corner of Arney Street the long grass has been removed and the unsightly, iron lamp post taken down, and the corner of the footpath levelled off; also that portion of the path has been cleared of weeds and grass, considerably improving the approach to the Domain gates. Ten thousand rainbow trout were this week liberated in streams in Kaihere, Patetonga, • and Tahuna districts by the Patetonga branch of the Acclimatisation Society. The streams which received the trout are the Waikaka, Maukoro Mangawhero, and Ngarua. By advertisement in to-day’s issue we announce the visit of Dr, Mary Armour, who has received a wonderful reception in Auckland. It is very seldom that Paeroa and the Hauraki Plains can hear world-famous speakers in their own district, and the opportunity should not be missed. A reminder is giveh to members of the Paeroa Cricket Club and those interested ip the game to turn up to the annual meeting, to be held in the Soldiers’ Club to-morrow (Saturday) evening. Advice has been received .that the following pupils of the local school have been successful in obtaining their Proficiency Certificates at an examination conducted on the visit this week of the school inspectors: Joy Dobson, Gwladys Gwilliam, Hilda North, Dorothy Robbins, Nance Fitch, Raymond Swann, Ron. Couper, and Errol Taylor. Great credit is due to the teachers and pupils concerned, especially in view of the fact that the examination passed has been held nearly three months earlier .than is usual These children are how eligible to pass straight into the High School, thus gaining three months’ extra tuition before the commencement of the new term. A. representative of the “Gazette” heard yesterday that there were council chambers at Ngatea ; at least it appears so by the follow discussion, which took place at a ratepayers’ meeting at Tahuna yesterday: The chairman of the Piako County Council asked of a Hauraki Plains county councillor, who halls from the vicinity of Ngatea : "Have you council offices down there ?” "Er—yes,” came the reply, which was accompanied bj' uproarious laughter from the meeting. “You haven’t got any more nasty questions, have you ?” asked another Hauraki Plains county councillor a little later.
