WAIKATO BEATS THAMES VALLEY A MODERATE EXHIBITION. The return match between Waikato and Thames Valley was played in the Paeroa Domain on Saturday last. The game was pot up .to expectations, and ended in another win fpr Waikato, the scores being 14 points to 3 in favour of the visitors. Fpotball in this union has not improved with the advancement of th® season, and in this instance Waikato had easily the better pf the game. Our backs were not in the same class as the visitors and our forwards also met a better pack. Both teams were altered, and the following players took the field: Waikato.—Mathieson; Quinn, Glenn, O’Brien ; Barton, Crawford; Mclntyre; Ryan (rover) ; McHardy, Shaw, Carter. Hamilton, Patterson, Keightley, Espiner. Thames Valley.—-Poland ; Samson, J. Magill, Stretton; Nichols. Gilpin; Hudson; Goldsbury (rover); Honey, P. Magill, Miller, Rosenfeldt, McMahon, Newdick, Atkins. The kick-off by Millen was returned to Gilpin, who also punted, the visiting forwards then advancing. Nichols failed to stop the rush, and McHardy headed a bunch which carried over the line. A force resulted. Shortly afterwards Hudson secured from a scrum, but was tackled. Gilpin picked up and sept to Nichols, to Magill, the latter being rtbpped by Mathieson. A penalty gave temporary relief to Waikato, Stretton being responsible for placing the home team in a good position again, but Golds-, bury kicked over, the. line and Waikato forced. Stretton opened another attack from the dropout by running up the line and centring.,, but Mathieson cleared. From; the throw-in Honey bustled Mclntyre and carried on to the defenders’ line., Offside play relieved, Mathieson with a good kick sending out at half way. P.atterson led the Waikato forwards into Thames Valley territory, bu.t Nichols 'reversed the position by intercepting. Stretton supported Nichols and carried the ball as far as Waikato’s corner flag. After some tight play McHardy relieved the pressure and brought the ball back into mid field. Barton fielded a penalty by the home team and Poland ultimately forcing. Magill opened a kicking bout, Mclntyre ending it with a mark. After the change-over Thames Valley reached the othen twenty-five flag. From the line-out Ryan broke away and made a good run. down the field. Poland’s tackle was sound, but the ball was transferred to McHardy, who, with a clear run, scored between the posts. Keightley converted. Wai-* kato 5, Thames Valley 0. Soon after the kick-out Glenn got possession and almost reached the Valley line, but a forward pass broke up the advance. Passing between Barton, Glenn, and Quinn also broke down at the critical moment, the ball going out in touch. Barton then failed with a drop-kick at goal. Wallnutt replaced Hudson, who was injured. A dangerosu rush headed by Ryan was relieved bv Poland. After a forward scramble Waikato gained a penalty and sent play to the Thames Valley twenty-five line. Goldsbury immediately returned to the other end of* the field, Mathieson clearing. A penalty against Crawford gave J. Magill a shot at goal, but the ball hit the post and rebounded. P. Magill fallowed up and sent over',, Waikato forcing. A fine kick by Mathieson sent the ball out in Thames Valley territory. The bell then rang for half-time, but the referee did not hear it. Pattern son got possession and, owing to several opposing players thinking the quarter had ended, scored practically unopposed. Keightley failed to convert. Waikato 8, Thames Valley 0. The second half saw Waikato backs on the move, but after several unsuccessful rushes Poland relieved to half way. McMahon and Goldsbury attempted an invasion, but Glenn neatly marked. Waikato backs then carried to Thames Valley territory, Where Gilpin was penalised. ■ Keightley converted. Waikato 11, Thames Valley 0. Honey relieved a long defence by the home team .and carried past half way. His pass to Nichols was intercepted by Glenn, this being bhe signal for mid-field play, which lasted for the remainder of the quarter.
Gilpin headed a loose rush to the Waikato twenty-five from the opening kick in the final round. Hamilton (Waikato) then retired and was replaced by Stewart. Magill centred, and in a scramble u'nder the posts Gilpin scored. J. Magill failed with an easy kick. Waikato 11. Thames Valley 3. The drop-out was followed up into Thames Valley territory, but Rosenfeldt turned the tables, and, supported by Atkins, returned to the other end pf the field. Ryan and McHardy relieved, but Stretton returned with a dash up the line, but was stopped within a few yards of his objective. The home forwards then collapsed, and the Waikato backs took control. Glenn marked iv- a good position and converted. For the remainder of the game Thames Valley had to defend, but no further points were registered, time being called with the scores, Waikato 14, Thames Valley 3. Mr T. Atkins was referee.
