THE CHEERFUL NUMBER. The September issue of “Ahssie” is as bright and cheerful as the Spring. It contains ajl the usual features by well-known artists and writers, and a. number of new discoveries figure in its pages. It seems to be one of “Aussie’s” special offices to discover this new talent and present it to readers in cheerful form. The writers and artists o»f Australasia who have made history and fame with theii brush and pen set a standard in. “Aussie” that acts as a beacon for these new-comers to follow, and n stands to the credit of “Aussie” that they are getting their chance in the ranks of art and letters. To further encourage this talent “Aussie” inaugurated in August a scheme for the improvement of the standard of Australasian black-and-white art and literature, offering practical encouragement, to artists and writers by setting aside a sum of £6O to be distribtued among them, over and above the payments for their accepted work. This competition, which was for a period of three months, doses with the October issue of “Aussie.” The published contributions will then be judged, and the prizes in the following amounts will be awarded ’. £2sfoi the best drawing; £5 for -the best drawing by an artist who has not previously had work published in “Aussie” ; £25 for the most humorous article, story, sketch, or verse ; £5 for the best suggestion for a humorous picture. This issue contains the work of between 40 and 50 artists, and the best stories, articles, verses, and paragraphs by Australasian writers, including Henry Lawson, Mary Gilmore, E. J. Brady, Hamer, Vance Palmer, and Frank Rollett.
