WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
• ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report from the engineer was received and approved of at the Ohinemuri County Council, meeting on Thursday last: Maratoto Stream Diversion.—The protection works for the diversion of the Maratoto Stream are about completed. This work was carried put on day labour under my supervision. Houmanga Road.—l found it necessary to renew a 24in p'pe culvert in a filling on Houmanga Road with concrete pipes, which were made in the county yard. The settlers carted the pipes from the Waihi railway station to the site free of cost. Whangamata Road.—Re grant of £l5O, £ for £, offered by the Mines Department for this road and refused by your Council at its last meeting: Fresh representations were made to the Minister and the position under which your Council was regarding this length of road was pointed out to him, and he agreed under the circumstances to give a, free grant of £l5O. Grants.' —At the request of the district engineer, Public Works Department, Auckland, the chairman and myself were asked to meet and discuss with him locally the grants to be placed on the Estimates for the current year, 1922-23, and after taking each item separately and discussing same on its merits, although, the pruning knife was freely used, on the whole the amount recommended was very satisfactory. Bridges.—A platform bridge on the Thames Road will need renewing shortly. I intend to replace same with concrete pipes. Paeroa Water Supply.—Repair work was carried out at the head works of the Paeroa water supply. Several leaks had taken place in the reservoir, and a portion Ofl the foundation that was washed put was made good with concrete and the leaks also stopped. A large amount of gravel has found its way into the reservoir, and has greatly reduced the carrying capacity of same. A considerable amount has been removed, and the balance will be dealt with when there is extra water flowing to create a scour. The filter baskets which contain the charcoal will require to be renewed, and also the grating.
