GRANTS ON ROADS.

A COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S OPINION <‘A FARCE ALTOGETHER.” A letter was received at the Thames County Council meeting on Wednesday from the Under-Secretary of Mines formally advising that the Council's applicaton for grants would ije considered when the Estimates were being prepared. The grants included: Puriri to Neavesville, £500; Puriri to Neavesville road bridge at Mcßeth’s crossing, £5OO ; T.ar,aru Creek Road and bridges (access to Sylvia Mine), £1000”, Puriri Creek road (access to prospecting area), £200; Hiktuaia to ? Whangamata (Wires track), £lOOO ; deviation of Kauaeranga to Tairua road at Neavesville battery, £1000; connecting road, Neavesville to Kauaeranga, £soo*; Hikuai to Whangamata, £5OO. The chairman said that the Government knew quite well they had no intention and could not give the Council any .assistance, "Why do they bother us with it,” he said, “You would think from the letters that there was a possibility of getting some of these grants. The work is absolutely essential, and what sort of a chance have you got when you have got it from their own officials that they are not making any grants for road business and that all grants are going to be under the approval of the Public Works Department.” Cr Faithful: It is a farce .altogether.
