HIKUTAIA NOTES.
(By
Scrutator.)
BAZAAR, . At the last meeting of the execut of the Hikutaia Bowling, Tennis, i Croquet Cfub it was unanimously cided, on the motion of Mr A. Alley, to hold a bazaar in order raise funds for the purpose of proi ly laying out in a manner harmoi ing with the site the Alley Memoi Park. The matter was advancec stage further last Wednesday nil wjien, at a meeting of the lady mi bers of the Bowling and Tennis C it was decided to fall into line make the baz.aar, a social as wall a financial success. The data ' fixed for the first or second w in September, a strong committee ing set up to consider) details then present their recommendati at an early date. Mr A'. W. A was elected director, Messrs J. E ! and F. Maxwell being appointed j secretaries and treasurers. In < nection with the bazaar it was de ed to conjoin ap art union* the se taries being instructed to apply the Minister for Internal Affairs the necessary permit. ROADS AND FOOTPATHS. The tall hedge which runs pari to the footpath from the Cath Church to the school is being pru severely, while the line of br which bordered .the outside of footpath has been cut down —imprj ments that will eliminate risk discomfort risked by those who the path at night, and will be hel to the path itself by enabling early sun tp get at it. It is tc hoped that the County Council now do its bit .in the way of imp ing the roads, which are in anytl but first-class order, and whic.h, < ing rainy weather are nothing a continuous series of puddles. In front of the new post office road is especially bad, the footj being flanked by a ditch whose i is about two feet high and whose tom is a beautifully soft, black, < mud of considerable depth. To a lady weaning a modern skirt to gotiate this "mud jump” is to ask the impossible, while a. man c< not take it dry shod. Obviousl crossing, at least, is a necessitycrossings may be as expensive as gravel recently dusted over the f paths so carefully as to suggest f it had been spread with an after,! tea-spoon, raked with a small to comb, and bought by the ounce f the chemist. We are continually vised “to be thankful for small r cies.” The mercies are small eno in all conscience, but about thanks—well, “nuff sed.” (By way, the post office is in the Tha County.) Mr Miller, member of* and M: Higgins, engineer to, the Haul Plains County Council, visited H taia on Monday. In company i Mr A- R. Robinson, chairman of Ohinemuri County Council, they spected the quarry on the Hikut Paeroa road, and examined the H -taia Creek to ascertain whethe: were possible tp punt road metal f the quarry from the bridge at Mr H. Alley’s gateway down to the n river, and thence tp Turua, or wl ever wanted. They appeared to tl that a trial made at spring tide wi give satisfactory results. If so Plains County difficulty re road m would be cheaply and satisfacto solved. The metal from the qua which, by the way. belongs tp Plains council, is said tp be Of cellent quality, durable, and emin ly suitable for macadamising i poses. POLLING PLACE.
