The Community Singing will be held in the Central TJieatre tp-inor-row night. The previous song sheets will again be sued, and judging by the great success the previous singing has been it is anticipated that the hall will be again packed.
Mr M. Andersop, of the Puke, had a bit of bad luck yesterday. He was clearing his table down and had forgotten that lie had secreted seven £5 notes and his post office savings bank book amongst the papers used as a t ablecloth. After making sure ne was not throwing away any knives or forks, he threw the paper into ths river. Some time afterwards i.t suddenly dawned upon him what he had done. He immediately set out downstream, but could not find any trace of the paper. Some residents down the river saw the paper floating past their place in midstream, but beyond that no further trace could be found.
The annual meeting of the Paeroa Bowling Club will be held in 'he Soldiers' Club on Saturday evening next at 8 o’clock. All members are requested to be present and intending members are invited. Among the recent appointments of Justices of the Peace appear the names of the following gentlemen on the Haruaki Plains: Messrs A. Chatfield (Kerepeehi), E. R. Whitechurch (Tahuna), and C. G. “Three cheers for Ngatea,” cried the captain of the Waihi team before the match commenced on Saturday. “Hauraki Plains, please !” came the indignant local selector's voice from the line.
Dave Pretty, champion axeman or the world, has received a challenge from W. Pech, of Victoria, to chop a two-ifoot white pine log for £2OO aside, the winner to take all. As a guarantee ot bona tides, £lOO deposit has been paid down. The challenge has been accepted, and the match will coine off at Hamilton on September 26. The challenger is a man standing 6ft 4'in in height, and weighing 16;;t 81b Pretty himself stapds 6ft 4in, so it should be a case of Greek meeting Greek. Pretty holds the world's record, 3niin 35 l-'ssec, for chopping through a 2ft white pine log and also holds the record for the 15-inch log, 34 l-ssec.
