A very pleasant evening was spent last Friday at the. residence of Mr and Mrs C. Fawcett, Kerepeehi, .when about twenty-five settlers Of the district paid them a surprise visit. Some male members of' the party had knocked at the back door of the house. The inmates, responding to the knock, had invited them in, thinking their’s, perhaps, to be a business visit. All were shortly afterwards interrupted by a knock at t,he front door.' When it was opened, a smiling group on the verandah was revealed, all carrying a basket 'or bundle, for an unwritten law of a surprise parly is that the members comprising it provide and get supper. Immediately happy voices and laughter announced the "surprise party” to be welcome, and soon one and all were seated inside in anticipation of a happy evening. Their hopes were realised. Musicians and vocalists were not wanting. Solos, both Vocal and instrumental, were rendered. “ Cheer germs ” from the community singing were distributed right and left, and so beneficial and powerful was their influence that even the fog, which at 8 p.m, lay heavy outside, was forced to disperse, leaving a beautiful clear spring atmosphere.
Parlour games had folks occupied in one room, while th.e game of "five hundred’’ claimed attention in another, and thus the evening hours quickly fled. After supper had been partaken of .the party began to leave for home, with hearts made merry by harmless fun.
