ENTERTAINMENTS.
CENTRAL THEATRE PICTURES TO-NIGHT. “THE DEVIL WITHIN.” The latest Dustin Farnurn picture, “The Devil Within,” produced by Fox, is to be screened this evening. It recalls in part Jack London’s story of “The Sea Wolf." The picture fades in with a scene of a towering brute of a sea captain, who treats his crew with habitual cruelty. The only one that dares question his wishes is Dr. Phillol, whom the captain respects slightly for his mental superiority. In a drunken craze the shipmaster arouses the wrath of some island savages by confiscating one of tfieir idols —thereby drawing upon himself a native witch’s curse. From then on a series of misfortunes befall the aging man. His redemption is finally ac-i compl.ished through suffering. The love theme has to do with the captain's nephew. WEDNESDAY NIGHT. “10,0ij0 MILES IN THE SOUTHERN CROSS." A matinee is to take place on Wednesday atfernoon for children, when the above picture is to be shown. This is a splendid travel picture of the beautiful South Sea Islands, with the outstanding and description title of “10,000 Miles with the Steam Yacht Southern Cross.” Accompanying the film is Mr George Tarr, who photographed the original, and he lectures in a most entertaining manner as the mystery and beauty of the unique places he has visited are unreeled upon the screen. Capital photography is a feature of this picture, which, can in very truth be called a super-pro-duction and a masterpiece. Most realistic indeed are the various scenes. The wondrous beauty of these “summer Uses of Eden, lying in purple sphere? of sea," is faithfully portrayed, while the habits and suetpms of the natives, a wedding, several of their fascinating dances, a beautiful panorama of Siota Island, the headquarters of: the Melanesian Mission, all make a picturesque and deeply interesting study. The whole entertainment is novel and instructive, and takes the audience righ.t off the beaten track. In the evening this excellent series will be repeated ; the fine picture describe above should certainly not be missed.
