NETHERTON NOTES.

(Own Correspondent.) The big dredge is now operating at Laughin’s bend in the Waihou river, and doing excellent work pumping ou: the river sand and tailings on to the stop-bank, which is to be made higher and wider. It is working two shifts, and for the time worked an astonishing amount of sand has been lifted. It was put ipto action a few hours after arrival here.

The dipper dredge is also doing splendid work. It is digging a thirtyfoot canal from Mr T. Vowles’ farm on the river bank to the centre of Wilson’s Road, about a mile and a half of the work being now completed. This canal will go through the properties of Messrs T. Vowles, Brooks, Dunlop, Waters, Chester, und Wilson, striking Wilson’s Road about halfway through. When this is completed it will afford drainage flor the whole of this large area.

A flood-gate at the foot of the Komata Road, leading, past Messrs Cashmore Bros, and Killgour’s properties, has jusf been completed, and will no doubt be found beneficial to the area it will serve.

The drag-line dredge which is working at Komata has almost completed its work. This canal is known locally as the "Panama Canal,” and passes through Mr J. Iqwin’s property and links up with the Komata Creek. A record piece of ploughing was done recently by Mr Chester with his 12 horse-power tractor. In two days he completed about ten acres, which is considered a very creditable piece of work. The farmers here ar,e very, sanguine that the coming season will be a successful one. ’ The roads are still almost impassable, and it is hoped that our worthy County Council will rectify matters this summer, and not let m have to scramble through the mud next winter. Although an old resident, I .have never seen the roads in such a deplorable condition as they have been this winter.
