SOCIAL EVENING.

A PLEASANT TIME SPENT; A very pleasant evening was spent by the scholars of the Paeroa District High School on Friday evening last in tne Parish Hall. The Object of the gathering was for the purpose of assisting the Russian Relief Fund. The evening consisted of items by tne high school pupils, a mock court, competitions, and games. The evening was organised by Mr Wilks, and passed off very pleasantly. The first item was a dialogue given by Masters Willie Leach and Ben Gwilliam as nigger boys. This was heartily received and caused rounds of applause, the jokes about the high school scholars being witty. Miss Mary Bertelsen sang “Memories” very sweetly, and received well merited applause. Master Allan North amused the audience with a recitation in broken Eng* lish, and was encored. Master Ivan Hall gave a remarkably fine representation of, Tom Sawyer, and was assisted in this by Jack Connolly and Fred Hayward. An original recitation entitled “Pomp and Circumistance” was given by Arolia NicholasThe mock court was quite an inovation. causing much merriment. Some of the charges were quaint, and funny, and some good hits were made. Dorotny Gunn was charged with being in possession of an unregistered firearm ; Frank Wilks with being expelled from Parliament in 17X4 ; William Leach, for being an insect, and Bob Flatt for not singing in tune. The court was presided over by a jury of ladies, the magistrate being Bricky Budd until he was charged with the offence Of shooting in spring. Others taking part in the procedure were Masters Ppland, Ardenr, Garry, North. Malcolm, Misses Tui Gibb, Doris Ryan, Frances Leach, Raye de Castro. Edith Helling, and Merle Byrne. The “Awkward Squad,” directed by “Sport” Poland, created much laughter. The squad consisted of Allan North, Albert Ardern, Carol Garry, Jack Tucker, Ben GwilliaM, and Willie Leach. The squad came on to’the stage masked and with their coats buttoned up back to front, and all otders were executed the reverse way. A duet was nicely played by Merle JByrne and Sybil .Budd called “Witches Flight.” Games competitions and a community sing-song filled up the rest of the programme. After supper the singing of “Auld Lang Syne brought to a dose a very enjoyable evening.
