THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9, 1922. LOCAL SHIPPING.

We are in receipt from Mr J. W. Silcock. local agent for the Northern S.S. Co., of the following statistics regarding shipping for the months of July 1921 and 1922, and the imports into the Thames Valley District for the past month compared with the corresponding month of the previous year show a decided increase, and this points to the fact that brighter days for business firms, farmers, and others are now

Altogether, the increase during the past month amounts to 598 tons, which is remarkable, and a good sign for the district generally. We understand that included in the tonnage landed at lower river landings from Kopu to Netherton and including Paeroa is 40 tons of manure only, whereas in the Te Aroha tonnage there were 203 tons of the same class of cargo, and as there were practically no manures carried during the month of July, 1921, the figures again point to the fact that a large business has been recommenced in this class of trade, especially in Te Aroha as no d übt the local farmers can do without manures, and this should be a good advertisement for the quality of land in the district.

While on the subject of shipping, matters pertaining to navigation and dredging should be continually kept before the notice of the Public Works Department by local bodies, otherwise our important waterway will soon be useless even to our present landing, and the much-talk-eb of question about opening the river and again bringing the shipping within the Borough will be a thing of the past.

We understand that Te Aroha people are in a worse plight than we are this end, that is regarding navigation only, as numerous snags and widening of the river by the Public Works Department dredge caused by dredging operations near the bank, or a similar cause, will, if not remedied, gradually but surely kill the Auckland-Te Aroha sea-borne trade, which is a great asset to the people of that district.
