TUBUA.
road improvements.
Considerable improvement lias been show-: on the Piako road, the Tuma end of which was recently in a shocking state. The O.R.P. settlers along Piako Road have donated £BO towards the work, and the County Council is algo finding an amount. Work, However, has unfortunately been delayed owing to the strandipg of .the scow engaged in carrying the metal for patching purposes. Some metal has already been put in the worst holes, and when more material is available the road should be in a fairly decent condition.
The Lands Department men have * been engaged in patching the Kopuaratn opd of. .the Piako road, and that ’ portion is in a very fair condition. ‘ There is one portion of road in the Turua township which urgently re- ' quires improvements. The portion referred to is between Mr McLean’s •fti:e along the waterfront and the hall. While driving to the Sports Club’s ball on Thursday evening a motor-car, whose driver was not conr versant with the state of the road, 1 became so firmly embedded in the 1 punctured surface that it was only 1 after three hours of hard work when i the vehicle was extricated and its occupants able to proceed to the ball— 1 just in time for supper. j TURUA’S OFFICES. 1 The offices being erected by the Turua Building Company are now ; practically completed; in fact, one of the rooms is already occupied. It 1 is a fine building, with roomy offices and a board room, and is a fitting monument to the enterprise of the local people. 1 DANCING. . 1 The Sports Club’s dancing classes, < held weekly, are - very popular with i th;e dancing public. The classes are i well conducted and attract large num- 1 hers each night. PIPIBOA. SCHOOL CONCERT. A very successful social and concert was given by the Pipiroa school children in the local hall on Friday evening. The items, which were Interspersed with games, were all well received, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The following childden contributed items : Mavis KePh, Cecil Arthur, eGo. Dalgleish, Nelly Gray, Greta Potter, TJirenie Potter, May Keith, Bertha Buchanan, Myra Keith A collection was taken up procure books for the school library. WAITAKAHUBU. PRESENTATION. At a social evening held at Wai-? takaruru recently presentations were made to Mr A. Otter and Miss S. Stretton on the eve of their marriage. Mr C. W. Harris, who occupied the chair, presented, on behalf of the local settlers, a silver coffee service and tray suitably inscribed to Miss Stretton and a suit-case, silver-mount-ed, to Mr Otter. Mr Harris spoke the valued work of Miss Stretton at the local post office and the keen sportsmanship of Mr Otter. On the evening of the wedding Mr W. Stretton gave a social in the local hall, which was crowded with friends of the happy couple. Mr and Mrs Otter returned on Monday from their honeymopp. POST OFFICE. Miss T. Faherty is now postmistress at Waitakaruru post office in place of Miss S. Stretton, who was recently married. WAIKINO. THE BOWLING CLUB. The annual general meeting, of the Waikino Bowling Club was held on Wednesday last in the library, and was presided over by the president of the dub (Mr J. H. G. Banks.) The minutes of the previous annual meeting were confirmed. The balancesheet for the season, which showed the club to be in a favourable position, was adopted, Tho committee’s report, covering the working of the culb for the past season and suggestions for the coming season, was - adopted. A unanimous vote of thanks was accorded to the out-going committee. to which the president suitably, responded. The following officers were elected: President, Mr J. H. G. Banks; vice-, presidents, Messrs H. Hewitt and R. B. Vercoe; secretary, Mr L. M. Murphy; committee, Messrs W. H. Quin, W. G. Colling, J. W. Jones, A. J. Stapleton, J. Odhim; green superintendent, Mr J. Hind ; green committee, Messrs J. ■ Hind ,H. Hewitt, A. SOvthberg; selector. Mr J. Hind. It was decided to hold the annual bowling social in the Victoria Hall on Friday, September 8, and it was resolved, on the motion of the president, to endeavour to make the function a greater success than what it has been in the past. NGATEA. ROAD METALLING. ft is good news to motorists and others using the roads round Ngatea that ai quantity of red metal is qow being, put on the rough bine stones It is anticipated that the whole length of the road from the bridge to Parry’s corner will have a coating of the blinding material by next week. The metal is settling well and the, road should soon be ip a good condition. MASQUERADE BALL At a meeting of the local fpotball club final arrangements were made for the fancy dress masquerade ball to-morrow evening. A number of donations were accepted for prizes for the best fancy dresses. SCHOOLMASTER’S HOUSE. The tender of Mr G. Giles, of Puriri, has been accepted for the erection of the schoolmaster’s residence. Mr Giles and the Education Board's building foreman visited Ngatea yesterday, and it was decided tp erect the house at the first possibility near the blacksmith’s shop. “PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION.” - A departure from the usual debates
organised by th® local Mutual Improvement Society was made last, evening when a mpek Parliamentary •lection was held in the Publip Hall, Mr C W Shultz presiding. After the sing-song the "candidates for the Thames electorate,” Mrs McKercher (Independent), Mr S. Blacklaws (Liberal), Mr. G. T. Davidson (Labour), and W. G. Hayward (Reform), made thoir speeches. In the absence of the Farmers’ candidate Mr Shultz gave an impromptu address on behalf of that party. During Question time the "candidates” were bombarded with questions in connection with matters in general. The matters discussed ranged from prohibition v. continuance to leasehold v. freehold. At the end of a lengthy and lively debate the election took place and resulted in Mr Davidson (Labour) gaining the honours, Mrs McKercher (Independent) being a good second. The successful “candidate” thanked the "electors” for their confidence ip him and in true Labour style promised that Ngatea would have almost anything it required. It was decided that the next function be held next Tuesday. TEACHER APPOINTED.
Advice was received last evening by the headmaster of .the local school that an appointment has been made to fill the vacancy on the staff created by the departure of Miss E. Jones. The new teacher is to be Miss Mary McGuire, who, according to the advice received, is to commence her duties immediately. The headmaster has at present, no small task ahead of him, having nearly 100 pupils, who, in 10’ classes, are separated in two buildings. THE POST OFFICE. The local postmistress,. Miss E. HiL ford, who, until recently had an assistant in Miss Clare, is now left to do all the work on her. own. With the ever increasing business at the office, assistance is required, and it is wondered when another appointment will be made. KEREPEEHI. TENNIS DANCE. A very enjoyable social evening was held by the Kerepeehi Tennis Club in the hall on Friday. There was a fair number of dancers' present. Good dancing music was rendered by Mesdames Chatfield and Hutchinson, while Mesdames Frecklington, Murdoch, Messrs Potter, Davis, Twist, and Harrison also assisted in that direction.
Musical items were rendered during the evening'by Mesdames Frecklington, Murdoch, Messrs Harrison, Twist, and Devereaux. The proceeds are to be devoted to the laying down of an additional tennis court at tho school grounds. HALL SITE.
In connection with the proposed purchase of a hall site a meeting of a committee formed by those interested was held on Monday evening, Mr A. Chatfield occupying the chair. Mr J. Twist has been elected hon- secretary and Mr R. Hutchinson treasurer. It was announced that the amount already in hand for the purchase of the site was £l3 ,13s. The meeting authorised the payment of the money to buy the site.
