ESTIMATED COST OF FACTORY.

VIEWS' OF MR. GORRINGE.

Eager to gather all possible information in connection with the proposal to erect a bacon factory on tlie Hauraki Plains, the Ngatea settlers solicited advice from Mr K. W. Gorringe, instructor of swine husbandry, during his lecture on the car ( e of the pig at Ngatea on Friday evening. Mr W. McDuff asked the lecturer if he could give an estimate of the cost to build a factory to cope with about 450 pigs a week.

Mr Gorringe: About £16,000, fully equipped and up-.to date. It cost ths Taura nga people £5OOO to put up a storage room with a capacity of 5000 to 8000 a year.

Mr Davids’on said it costs 12s a pig to send them away from the Plains. Mr Gorringe: Why shouldn’t you have that 12s ? He said he had so many inquiries to build factories that he had advised settlers not to do so. The machinery alone for the Tauranga works cps.t £lBOO. He advised the settlers here not to build works unless they were sure of the loyalty of their shareholders. If every farmer oji the Hauraki Plains would suggest a bacon works put here, and every one became a shareholder, tlie company may think it worth while. It was tlie business of the proprietary concerns to make tlie shareholders of the co operative concerns disloyal.
