OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING* The usual monthly meeting was held yesterday, when there were present : Crs. A. R. Robinson (chairman), W. F. Johnstone, H. M. Corbett. S. Morgan, J. Johnson, and A. D. McGuire. The engineer, Mr E. Shaw, and clerk, Mr R. W. Evaps, were .also present. HEAVY’ TRAFFIC BY-LAW.
Mr L. May, assistant engineer, Public Works Department, wrote with reference to the prohibition of heavy traffic on the county roads suggesting having a conference and arranging a scheme for repairing any special damage done by the motor lorry. With reference to the necessity for taking out a license for this lorry, he drew the Council's attention to section 373, Municipal Corporations Act, 1908, and section 6. Acts Interpretations Act, sub-section J, which stated that the by-law does not apply to the Public Works Department.—Received. NOXIOUS WEEDS.
The Agricultural Department wrote notifying that Japanese wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius) had been added to the third schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act.—Received. CONTRIBUTION TO RIVER IMPROVEMENTS.
The Secretary of the Treasury wrote asking for an additional contribution of £ll2 5s Bd, under the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers Improvements Act, 1910, and amendments.
The clerk said that he had gone into the matter carefully and found that, the amount was not owing; <n fact there'was a credit balance due to the Council of £65. He had written to the Treasury, and a further letter had been received from the Treasury stating that Mr Evans’ statement was correct, and forwarding £56 16s 9d.
The. chairman said that it was evident that if; Mr Evans had not noticed the error the Council would have been at a loss. PAEROA TE AROHA ROAD.
The Minister, of Public Works wrote stating that he would be pleased to give the Council’s application for authority to spend £3OO subs'dy promised for the Paeroa-Te Aroha Road his careful consideration. —Received. MRS. DEARL’S COMPENSATION. A letter was received from the Chief Surveyor setting out. the position and stating that the application for compensation should be forwarded to the Lands Department. CATTLE TICK. The chairman stated that he had attended the conference, and it was decided to erect a dip, and pledged the Council to the sum of £5O. The cost would be £loo' flor Thames, £lOO for Coromandel, £l5O subsidy from the Government, Hauraki Plains £5O, and Ohinemuri £5O, and no more. Cr. Johnson said that he thought the cattle could be sprayed. The chairman said that it would not be practicable to spray dry cattle.
Cr. Johnstone said that a man couid spray or dip just as he liked. But the point was that if the tick came to a district no stock would be allowed to go out of that area unless dipped. A dip was looked upon as an insurance.
The action of the chairman and Cr. Johnf.tone in agreeing to contribute £5O towards a dip to be erected in the Thames County was agreed to. Cr. Johnstone said that the Government recognised its responsibility up to £l5O on each dip, and he did not agree with the Opotiki County in asking ihe Government to provide the dips free. A resolution to this effec: was passed, and it was decided to notify the Opotiki County. LAND TAKEN FOR ROAD.
Mr E. W. Porritt wrote stating that his client, MY H. Benner, was prepared to accept the,£l2 10s offered by the county for a piece ofl land, taken for a road at Waikino, provided the Council fenced the section. The offer was agreed to on the motion of Cr. Morgan. WORK FOR RATES
Mr E. M. Banks wrote asking for permission to do £l2 worth of wbr'k on tl e Beach Road, the amount io come off his next year’s rates.
The engineer said that the work required doing, and .on Cr. Corbett's motion it was agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the engineer. EMPLOYMENT.
Mr L. C. Gilbert applied fpr employment with tractor and grader. Tne chairman said that he had seen the work done by Mr Gilbert in the Thames County, and moved that the engineer view the work and report on the matter to the Council. WAIKINO WATER SUPPLY.
The head teacher wrote drawing the Council’s attention to the inadequate supply of water to the school, and i; was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the engineer to rectify. WAIHI-WHANGAMATA ROAD. The Under-Secretary for Mines, in reply to a request of the County for authority to expend £3OO, balance cf the vote to make good the damage done by floods, wrote stating that afler considering the facts ofj the case he was prepared to authorise £l5O, £ for £, the amount to be expended under the supervision of the Public Works Department, who will issue the necessary authority on product! m of the plans,'—Received. Cr. Corbett said that it was impossible to do the work for £l5O. If the Department could not uo the wbrk the road, which is closed now, must be kept closed.
It was decided to again approach the Minister bn the matter.
