DISTRICT NEWS.

WAIKINO. BOWLING CLUB REUNION:. The annual reunion of the members of the Waikino Bowling Club took place at the Victoria Hall on Friday last. The chair tvas occupied by the president, of the club, Mr J. H. Banks, who gave the loyal toast ‘‘The King,” which was duly honoured. The evening proved a most enjoyable one, songs, toasts, etc., being rendered. There were also present bowlers and friends from other parts of the dis-t. trict. The function finished soon after midnight. On Saturday a meeting convened by Mrs J. H. Banks was held by the ladies of the Church of England and others interested for the purpose of raising funds for St. John’s Church, Waihi. The meeting was well attended, and after some discussion it was decided to have a. social and dance in the Victoria Hall on Friday, August 11, and everything will be done to make it a great success.

NGATEA.

TELEPHONIC AND POSTAL. To be ready for the installation of the Ngatea telephone exchange 190 party-wire telephone poles have been landed at Ngatea by the s.s. Gael during the last few weeks. The post office, the work on which had been hung up for want of materia’, is now nearing completion, and with its new coat of paint, red iron i oof, neat fence, and substantial bridge across the drain, the new building looks quite an ornament Io the township. The contractor’s work on the building should be finished by the end of the week.

SCHOOLMASTER’S RESIDENCE. The Ngatea School Committee at a recent short meeting decided to recommend that the,, site for the headmaster’s residence' be opposite the old post office. It is believed that it will not be very long before building operations will commence. THE FACTORY. Din ing the past month the supply 'has been the lowest for any one month during the year, but it is 25 per cent, in advance of the butter-fat supplied during a similar period last year. The supply is expected to increase rapidly this month. The suppliers appear to be keen to get going for the coming iseason after the recent successful meeting of suppliers. ROAD METALLING. Road metalling by the Lands Department is continuing apace, but, so far only the rough blue metal is being used, and for some time no red blinding has been put on. The truck rails now extend along the road towards Kerepeehi, round Parry’s corner, and a branch line continues on into Orchard East Road, which hitherto has been unmetalled. It should not be long before Orchard East Road should Have a good coating of metal, and a few of the bumps taken put bfl the Ngatea-Kerepeehi road. In the meantime, however, the rough metal is irritating the rubber-tyred traffic. STOCK SALE. The Farmers’ Auctioneering Company held a successful sale at Ngatea on Monday. There was a little improvement shown in the prices, there behig a better demand. There was a fair yarding, and all the cattle was sold. The following prices were realised : Beef steers, £6 to £8 4s ; beef cows, £3 to £5 8s ; yearling heifers, £1 15s ; two-year steers, £2 10s.
