FOOTBALL.
INTER-UNION MATCIL WIN FOR PAEROA. Waihi and Paeroa met on Saturday at Paeroa in the inter-union competitio.n for the Frank Poland Memorial Cup, Paeroa registering their first win in the contest this season by 11 points to 3. The weather was not of; the sort to bring spectators out in force, as i: was a miserable day, with a very strong, bleak wind blowing across-* field. Both teams which took the field had several alterations from the original iselections, but although individual play was the order of the day a good even game was witnessed. Tlie most prominent feature was the sound tackling, especially by some members of the home team. Moore’s kicking was also excellent. Of the Paeroa forwards Long was about the best. They all played fairly well, but Smith is losing His .dash 1 , I. Poland .was the pick of the backs, and L. Shaw came next. Cashmore and McNeil were weak to begin with, but in the second half both these men played much better. There was not, much to pick and choose between the members of the Waihi pack, and of the backs Williams, Dellamoie, and P. Bennie showed up.
The game opened with loose play in mid-field, followed by a penalty to Waihi. Dellamore had a kick at goal, but failed. A forward rush* to Waihi’s twenty-five gave way to a penalty kick to Paeroa, but Taylor failed. After a period in neutral zone another penalty kick, this time by Moore, failed. Paeroa then went on the attack, and with a loose rush had th® visitors in an uncomfortable position, but P. Bennie relieved with a mark hear the posts. Shortly .afterwards the ba.l was kicked out to Cashmore, who made a nice run up the line, but Jost the ball in the act of scoring. Paeroa resumed the pressure, and Graham was penalised for holding on. Moore took the kick from a good position and converted. Paeroa 3, Waihi 0. The quarter ended with play in neutral territory. The second round opened with a kicking bout, the bill eventually going out at half way. From the throwin T. Johnson sent out at Waihi’s twenty-five flag. Paeroa forwards carried on from the line put, and Taylor was almost over by the posts when he passed out. Waihi picked up and carried to the other end of the field.. Loose play followed in Paeroa's territory until Verall marked in front of the posts and converted. Paeroa 3, Waihi 3. After open play Waihi became aggressive and kicked over the dead-ball line. Some tight play in midfield was indulged in, after wh’ch Wivhi tried a little passing, Dellamore finally kicking over the line. Paeroa forced. Just on half time Rolleston made a dash for the line, but Poland brought him down on the
corner flag. In the second half Paeroa gradually' worked up the field .and Waihi forced. Play then went to the other end of the field and Paeroa was in difficulties on their line until relieved. Following loose play L. Benney got possession and di a gaitop up the line, but. was brought down inside Waihi’s twenty-five line. A forward push by Paeroa terminated a long spe’l of open play .and brought about a penalty to the home-team in.the corner. Moore took the kick ,and converted from a very difficult position. Paeroa 6, Waihi 3. Play settled in Paerba’s twenty-five line ir t|he last round until Cashmore relieved tc half way. From there the forwards carried to Waihi’s twenty-five. While attacking strongly Paeroa gained a penalty in front of the posts and Moore again had a successful kick. Paeroa 9, W’aih.i 3. In open play pu Paerpiris .side of half way McNeil go: possession and made a good run- to Yyaihi’s twenty-five. Tlie play tjien became very fast, the ball travelling rapidly up and down the field, but no further points were scored, the game cn line : Paeroa 9, Waihi 3. Mr T. Atkins W.as referee.
THE CURTAIN-RAISER. PAEROA AND WAIHI, SCHOOLS. Paeroa and Waihi High Schools fifteens played as a curtain-raiser to the Senior game at Paeroa, and after a very good exhibition the local team won by 9 points tp 5.. Tries were scored by Thorburn, Garry; and Tpweis for Paerpa, and Jamieson scored and converted for Waihi. Mr R. J. Bramley was referee. JUNIORS. WAIHI 11, PAEROA 0. The junior representative match between Paeroa and Waihi was played at Waihi, the home team gaining a victory by 11 points jo 0. “SPRINGBOKS” 3, “ALL BLACKS” JTwo teams selected from the local primary school boys took possession of th j No. 2 ground and gave an “AH Black v. Springboks” display. However, our future reps, did not shaje so badly, and an evenly contested game ended in a victory for the “Springboks” by 3 to 0. S. Williams was the star who scored the try. Mr Bert. Neil had charge of the whistle. PLAINS MATCHES. SENIORS. Kerepeehi played Waitakaruru at Kerepeehi, Waitakaruru winning by 12 points to 0. Lyes scored the first try and Wallis the next three. Mr «1Avey refereed. Patetonga and Turua played at Ngatea, the latter winning a hard, fast, and evenly contested game by 6 points to 5. Thrupp kicked a penalty goal and McMillan scored a try for Turua. Tui scored for Patetonga, T. Foote converting. Mr. R. B. Pen,lington was referee. Waitakaruru is pow leading with 12 points, Turua 11, and Patetonga 7. Turua has still one match to play. • JUNIORS,. Waitakaruru beat Kerepeehi by default. Patetonga and Turua played at Ngatea, Turua winning by 9 points to 0.
