THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. MONDAY, JULY 24, 1922. PROPOSED BACON FACTORY.
Though Mr. Baron, in his address at Ngatea on Thursday, did not appear to hold out much hope for the immediate construction of a bacon factory on the Hauraki Plains, he recognised the future possibilities, and judging by his remarks it is only a matter of time before the factory will be essential. He even went as far as to indicate that the Hauraki Plains would be more central for a bacon factory than at Te Aroha. It is therefore assumed that if a large factory is erected on the Plains, the one at Te Aroha may not be required. The figures quoted certainly make it appear as though such an institution is warrantable somewhere on the Plains. It is estimated that the N. Z. Meat Packing and Bacon Company took away 6,000 pigs last year, while it was stated that the Kiwi Company claimed another 3,000, making a total of 9,000 pigs for the one year. Mr. Baron estimates that a factory to cope with not less than 10,000 should be built. With 9,000 offering last year it is only reasonable to announce that with the advancement of the district, there will be ven a greater uumber next year and that practically all could be secured for the local factory. There would, therefore, be more than sufficient to keep going a factory of 10,000 capacity. Mr. Baron appeared to be sympathetic with the proposal and has promised the matter his fullest consideration.
Though the Ngatea settlers were in the majority at Thursday’s meeting there was never any suggestion that the factory, if erected, should be at Ngatea, the settlers being unanimous in their opinion that it should be at the most central, position on the Hauraki Plains. This is certainly the right attitude to adopt and the settlers in each part of the Plains should give the proposal their hearty support and leave it to those most competent to judge as to which would be the most suitable or central site. By co-operation tbe proposal can be made a success. By disunity and controversy it wil' be a miserable failure.
