A rather interesting story is in circulation concerning a local poultryman, who purchased a pen of valuable White Leghorns from Invercargill, a carrier, and a charity bazaar. It appears that the fowls had been addressed to the purchaser, care of 1 carrier. The carrier in question was one of the supporters of a charity bazaar or Paddy’s Market, held recently, and had been receiving t, a considerable amount of; poultry for sale at the market. Consequently, when the railway officials rang him that a. crate of fowls was awaiting him at the station : ,he promptly gave instructions for them to be sent along to the market, and sold "for the cause.” The birds, it might be stated, were rather dirty and h.draggledr looking after their long journey, and no one dreamt of their true value. An old lady came into Lb,e bazaar in search of a bird for the table, and asked the price of “the white rooster in the box.” “Five shillings,” replied a willing helper (the freight alone on a bird from Invercargill is nearly £1), and promptly rang the rooster’s neck, and wrapped the, lady up her purchase. The pullets were sold alive, but where they went to no one knows, and the carrier in question lias been searching the district fob them for the last few days. Rumour has it that it would be dangerous to ask him, “How are the poultry ?” For Influenza, take Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure.
