DISTRICT NEWS.
WAIKINO. LADIES' GUILD SOCIAL. A social and euchre tournament under the auspices of the Waikino Ladies’ Guild took place at the Vic-, toria Hall on Friday last. The social was opened with a waltz, in which all took part. The function proved a success, there being about 200 present including supporters from Waihi, Paeroa, and Karangahake, and was the largest gathering this season. The M.C.’s were Mrs. C. Robertson and Miss Shaw, who carried out. their duties to the satisfaction of those assembled, z The winners of the euchre tournament were Mr. Whitley and Mrs. Parker. The supervision of, tne table s was ir the hands of Mrs. D. Currie. The supper adjournment took place at 10.30, and the supper tables were beautifully decorated green and while.
The pianist for the occasion was Mr. Bert Clark, of Karangahake, who was thanked for the able manner la which he performed bis duties. The extras were played by local musicians.
The function was for funds to enable the Guild .at a. future date to have a bazaar, the proceed of which will be given in aid of the Waihi Hospital and local assistance. The whole of’ the arrangements were in the capable hands of the president, MrsT. Watters and the bon. secretary and treasurer, Mrs H, F. Marlow, and committee.

SCHOOL FLAG-POLE.
The recently erected flag-pole •■it the Waitakaruru school was officially bestowed upon the school on Friday. The flag was hoisted foil the first, time at 2 p.m., when the children were mustered and addressed by the chairman of the school committee, MrC,W. Harris, who detailed the origin of the Union Jack, at the same time emphasising the privileges of being a subject of the British Empire. He also strongly recommended the children to be loyal tp their flag at all times, and mentioned the great deeds that their fathers, brothers, and cousins had done for the Empire and flag, and the great, work of the wo-men-ifolk of the Empire in nursing the sick and the wounded, assisting also in many other ways to keep the work of the Empire going whilst the men were fighting.
The children tlien saluted the flag as the chairman hoisted it upon the stall for the first time. The singing of the National Anthem followed. The chairman was supported by tlie other members of the school committee (Messrs. 'R. Hunter, S. P. Caie, J. Donaby, and N. W. Hedges). The children were well conducted by the headmaster, Mr. L. Griffiths. After the ceremony a few games and a Lollie scramble were arranged, the' latter in particular being greatly appreciated by the children. SCHOOL BOUNDARIES. A conference between the Mangatarata and Waitakaruru school committees was to have been held on Friday to discuss matters in connection with school boundaries, but owing io the inability of the Mangatar,ata representatives to attend the meeting has Been postponed indefinitely. THE ROADS. The county engineer (Mr, J. Higgins) and Mr. C. W. Harris (one .>f the riding members) made an inspection of the Waitakaruru roads, and 'i report in this connection will be submitted .to the next council meeting. The’county council tractor, whicli was engaged in grading operations, recently broke down and is now undergoing repairs. It should soon be going again at the work in hand Two tenders have been let for cleaning drains on either side of the Stream Road. Messrs. Haley and Co. were successful with one tender and Mr. P. Williams has the other contract. CHURCH FUNDS. It. is reported that the effort by tne local Methodist people to raise fyinds to build a church at Waitakaruru is meeting with success and already a considerable sum is said to be on hand. NGATEA. BAZAAR COMMITTEE. , A meeting of tlie Ladies’ Bazaar Committee, which 'has been entrusted wPh arrangements to organise a bazaar in aid of the Ngatea, public hall funds, met on Monday evening, Mrs. Hayward presiding. Miss E. Jones, who is shortly to leave the disti’ict, handed in hei resignation as secretary. Mrs. Potter was elected to the vacancy. It was decided to hold a bazaar on October 31 and November 1. It was decided to honour the approaching marriage of Miss G. Clare with a gift evening, to be held in the hall next week. SCHOOL CONCERT. The Ngatea school children are at present practicing assiduously for a concert which is to be held on the eve of tlie departure of their teacher, Miss E. Jones.
