“I have never been a major, I have never been an alderman, I have never ben a councillor, but I have been a member oif a school board ; I think it is a great deal better to look after the brains of the future than tne drains,” said Mr. C. A. House, the English poultry judge, at a social gathering at Rangipra (reports the “Lyttelton Times”). Mr. House was explaining that he felt more at home around the festive board than in the council chamber, where he had just previously been accorded a civic reception. Mr. W. A. Banks (Mayor of Rangiora) a little later in the evening did not miss his opportunity of scoring against the visitor. He said that Mr. House had very badly missed his mark in making the statement, in Rangicra, as he (Mr. Banks) had been a school teacher for twenty-five years, a member bf the Education Board for a number of years, and was also a member of the Council of Education for the whole Dominion, So he was in the position of looking after brains as well as drains. (Laughter.)
