A well attended meeting of the Kerepeehi Tennis Club was held in the hall on Thursday evening, Mr, J. Twist presiding. To cater for the requirements of the coming season it was decided to lay down an additional grass court in the school grounds. It is understood that when the recreation ground is put in order provisioa will WS ffiade for a couple of concrete or asphalt courts, so that, this new grass court will only be a temporally erne for immedia’e requirements. It was reported that the present court was in good order, and that with a little rolling and the grass being cut a first class playing area will be ready for the coming season. It was decided to hold a working bee next Saturday to put down the new court. It was decided to hold a euchre part.’, and dance in the near future, and the following entertainment committee was formed : Mesdames Fawcett Twist, Tunis, Frecklington, Devereaux, Hutchinson, Miss L. REvans (secretary), Messrs J. Twist, J. Murdoch, J. Wilson, B. Frecklington Hoff, S. Bridge, J. M. Devereaux, A: J.: Innis. C. Fawcett, G. A. Avery, and R. Hutchinson. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Messrs W. It was decided to utilise £1 to purchase cocoa and sugar to institute free, hot drinks for the children. It was decided to give the Tennis Club permission tp put down a clay court and remove the shelter shed to enable the work to be carried out.
TURUA. CHURCH FUNDS. In order to augment the building fund for a proposed Anglican Church at Turua a very pleasant dance was he’d in the Victoria Hall on Thursday evening. Ther,e was a large attendance of dancing people, and the fund should benefit considerably Good music- was’ provided by kiesdames Brown, Mu.les, Goodsell, and Mr. D. Hill. Mr. J. Schmidt capably carried out the duties of M.C. THE ROADS, It is little wonder that the Turua settlers are advocating for a permanent reading scheme, and one has. only to travel over the roads t.o see that the settlers should be unanimous in their appeal for good roads. The dangers of travelling over the Piako Road are now small in comparison with those of a portion of the Hauraki l-toad. No part pf that road has a good surface, but between the saleyards and the school it. is in a shocking conditions. Some of; the holes must be several feet deep, and extend right across the road. There will soon be nothing left of this portion if nothing is done very soon. In more than one plpee the fascines are protruding from the deep puddles, STOCK SALE. At a stock sale conducted by Messrs Buckland and Sons at the Turua yards on Friday there was a big yarding, the whole of a local settler’s herd being sold. The bidding was frequently slow, but nevertheless some very fair prices were realised. PIPIROA. A DANCE. A very successful dance was held at the Pipiroa Halil on Thursday evening in aid of the Iqill funds. About 50 couples occupied a good floor, A good supper was provided, the catering being done by the Ngatea bakery. The music was supplied by Mr Hunter, of Waitakaruru, and Mr J. Kelly was M.C. Extras were supplied by Mesdames J.. Keith, J. Hendron, and E. A Potter. Songs were rendered by Messrs Hendron and Titchener. The visitors to the dance included those from Kopuarahi and Wait.akaruru, while a party of, 30 travelled by launch from Ngatea, NGATEA, THE POST OFFICE. Though the new Ngatea post, office, which is nearing completion, is more up to date, its diminutive size is frequently commented upon by the settlers. It is certainly a much better looking building, while the 26 private letter boxes (now; installed)
and the proposed telephone exchange will be. decided improvements, the settlers think that while the Government was on the job .a larger structure could have been built. Itjs size is 12ft by 14 ft. The old one is lOf.t by 12ft A decidedly essential improvement op the old office is the installation of two telephone boxes which are being provided for in the new building. The letter boxes are of iron, and a great improvement on the ordniary wooden ones, which have previously been issued by the Department
