NATIVE CHILD'S DEATH.
A child belonging to a Native named Herewani died suddenly at. Waitolii on Wednesday morning at three o’clock. The only cause the natives could attribute the death co was that in February, 1921, the child was returning from the Mangaiti public school one day, and while walking along the road a horse and trap overtook her and she stepped aside on to a culvert which broke away, causing an injury to her right hip. The child was then takep home, and had been confined to bed ever since, and during the whole period had not been attended by any n\edical man. Constable Mcdinchy after making these investigations communicated with the coroner at Waihi, Mr. W. M. Wallnult. THE INQUEST. An inquest was held by the district coroner, Mr. Wallnutt, Constable McClinchy conducting on behalf of the police. Dr. Little gave evidence of making a post-mortem examination, and said that the child was in a very bad condition of. tuberculosis, prpbably caused by the accident to the hip. Evidence was given by deceased’s parents, who stated tjiat prior to February, 1921, the child was in excellent health, but after the accident had never been able ,to get about. The child had been carried home, and the thigh was much swollen, They applied hot fomentations, and after some months the hip burst and this gave the sufferer a good deal of ielief and the pain ceased. Thp child was not able to move about. They had n"t called in any doctor. In giving his verdict in accordance with, the medical evidence the coroner said that he would bring the matter under the notice of the Ohijnemuri County Council. Th# culvert, which he had seen, was still in a bad State.
