The Thames Valley Electric Power Board gives notice that the power will be cut off on Sunday next frpra 9 a.m, to 10 p.m.
Punctuality was observed by our city fathers last night with the exception of the junior member of that body, who arrived fifteen minutes l.ate.
Messrs E. Walton, Hauraki Plains County Clerk, and J. Higgins, County Engineer, were in Paeroa yesterday after making a tour of inspection of the southern end of the Hauraki Plains County.
Tim shipping at the Northern Company's wharf at the Puke looked brisk this morning, when two boats arrived from Auckland with 350 tons of general cargo and benzine consigned to Paeroa, Waihi, Te Aroha, anl Morrinsville.
The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Business Men's Association will be lipid in the Criterion Buildings on Monday next, July 17.
An offer to supply gravel from his quarry at 10s per yard or delivered to within three miles at 14s per yard was received from Mr C. A. Hopping by the Thames County Council. On the motion of Cr. Alley it was decided to obtain a report from the foreman.
In connection with the vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation of Cr. McDonald a resolution was passed at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council instructing the returning officer to take the necessary steps to fill the vacancy on the Council.
The Waihou River, said Cr. Death at the Hauraki Plains County Council meeting on Monday, was the lowest it had been for some time. Mr. Lockie Gannon, who was waiting on the Council, said the Waikato River was also very low.
Business reports of activities in th? land agency business show that a number •sales have taken place during th<e last few weeks. Edwin Edwards, land agent, of Paeroa, reports that during the last five weeks he has effected the following sales : Farm of 105 acres at Komata from W. K. McLean to R. Gibson., of Tirau : farm of 4814 acres, P.ajeroa, from the Trustees of the late T. Hargreaves to Mr. Billington, of Masterton ; form of 62 acres, near Paeroa, fropi Mr. Marshall, to a partnership; 52-acre farm at Awaiti, from Mr. Western to Mr. B. Coake, of Waitoa ; 23-acr,e fruit farm, at Houapai, North Auckland, from Mr. R. Gibson to another; section at Takapuna, to Mrs. Marshall; house, Coronation Street, Paeroa, from R. H. Walmsley to Mr G. Deyill, of Christchurch ; house, in Station Road, Paeroa. from Mr O. Overall to Mr J. King; house., in Hill Street, from executrix of the late F. Uc Manquais to Mr. G. Otter; section of seven acres of land, in Paeroa, from Hauraki A. and P. Association to Mr, J. Walls ; block of four building sections, near Catholic Church, to Mr. Moore.
" These sort of speeches might fall upon ill-balanced minds and result in crimes of violence,” asserted Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., during his remarks at Wellington on Tuesday in fining a Labour man £25 and costs on a charge of inciting violence through the agency of an address.
Mr. Arthur J. Bruff, horse and cattle disease specialist, will be at the Paeroa Hotel until further notice.
Regarding timber companies carting ever roads, the Thames County Council at its meeting on Wednesday expressed the opinion that the companies should be required to keep roads in order while the carting was being done. The chairman said the Council must insist on this course.
With reference to the site for a public pound at Hikutaia, the Auckland Land Board has intimated to the Thames County Council that portions of the saleyards at Hikutaia would have to be purchased if- the Council required a public pound. At the meeting on Wednesday Cr. Niccol promised to interview the Commissioner of Crown Lands on the matter.
A brief, discussion took place at the Thames County Council meeting on Wednesday as to whether the Council squid construct, approaches to bridges built by settlers. The chairman thought that when a settler constructed a bridge at his own expense the least the Council could do was to make approaches. Further consideration on tlie matter in general was deferred,
Mr A. V. Trembalh, 0$ Hikvtaia, in a letter to the Thames County Council, drew attention to the condition of the Hikutaia-Maratptp road, and stated that a timber, wagon was *arting loge to the station and the road was not in a fit condition to withstand such traffic, especially at this time of the year. Cr. Alley said logs had been carted apd carters should be asked to fill up the holes. The timber wagon from the mill was working all the time. The Council decided to ask the carters to repair the road.
The Paeroa branch of the Loyal Orange Lodge will parade at the Methodist Church on Sunday evening. The Rev. W. J. Entieott will take as bis subject “The Coming Religion” and the choir will render special anthems and singing. Members are invited to be in their seats early.
The clerk of the Thames County Council said at the last Council meeting that most of his last week had been occupied in compiling statistics required under the new Act. Mr. HLowe (the chairman) said that it appeared as if the Department’s increasing enpenditure during the past few years was largely due to the obtaining of statistics from local bodies.
While reporting on tlie deputation to Wellington consisting of himself and the Mayor of Thames Mr. H. Lowe (chairman of the Thames County Council) wished to express appreciation on the way Mr. T. W. Rhodes, MP., had assisted the deputation. It was decided 'to send a letter of thanks to Mr. Rhodes.
