JERSEY BREEDERS’ CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Thames Valley Jersey Breeders’ Club was (held on Friday In the Soldiers’ Club, Paeroa. Present: Messrs W. J. Hall (president), R. Smith, M. Crimmins, B. Veale, C. Price, R. Whittep, K. Dean, R. Stock, J. Irwin, G. Buchanan and V. Dunlop, secretary. After the minutes had been confirmed Mr. Hall said, that he had received word that his name had been reinstated as a judge. The council had intim,ated that it reserved the right to have the last wdrd, and declined to give any reason for having removed his name from the list. In connection with this matter Mr. Hall said that the man who was responsible for the removal pf his name from the list of judges w.as not now a member of the council. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. Ithc report and balance-sheet was read as follows : "I have great pleasure in presenting the first annual report and bal-ance-sheet. The past yean has been a strenuous one for dairymen owing to the decline in value of dairy products, The altered conditions, however, have called more than ever for dairy efficiency, and the Jersey, with its heavy producing qualities, has enhanced its popularity in all parts of the Dominion, and no better evidence of this is required than tlhe high prices that were realised for Jerseys during the year. Membership.—The total membership is now 32, and it is confidently expected that this number will be doubled next year. Finance,—The attached balancesheet shows a credit balance of 13s lOd. This is highly satisfactory, considering that the Club is in its initial stages and some of the expenses will not be recurring. Demonstrations.—Duping the year demonstrations were given at Paeroa, Matatoki, Turua, and Ngatea, tlhe demonstrators being Messrs H. B, B. Watson, W. J. Hall, G. Buchanan, and E. J. (Walters, t° whom the grateful thanks of the members is due. A demonstration was also to have been given at Hikut.aia, but owing tp unforeseen circumstances had to be postponed. but will be given as early as pdssihle during the year. The sdhool children were invited to each demom Stratton, and prizes were donated for the best essay on the demonstration. Shows.—Donations of £2O were made to the Hauraki A. and P. Association and two guineas to the Hauraki Plains A. and ,P. Association towards tlhe prize'money in the pedigree Jersey classes. Conclusion. —In conclusion, I have to thank the Hauraki Plains Gazette and Thames Star for the valuable assistance rendered to the Club through tlhe columns of. ; the press ; also the members pf the Executive for their whole-hearted support and co-operation. ;

I wish particularly to thank our hon. secretary for the very able manner in which he has carried out his duties and the interest he (has shown in our Club, and confidently look forward tp tihis year’s operations being more successful than ever. The balance-sheet showed subscriptions amounting to £l6, from 32 subscribers at 10s each; donations, £lB 7s 6d; unexpended! amount drawn from petty cash account, lOd; total receipts, £34 8s 4d. Expenditure!: Books and stationery £1 2s 3d, printing and advertising £6 5s 6d, hire of meeting room £1 ss, donation to Hauraki A. and P. Association £2O, dem.bnstra.tion essay prizes (Paeroa and Matatokij £2, bank charges 10s, cheque book 4s, stamps £2 7s 9d, credit balance in bank 13s, petty teaslb <in hand lOd. Mr Buchanan thought that the club was to be congratulated on its successful year. The large amount donated to the Hauraki Show had well repaid the club in stimulating interest in the Jersey breed of. stock. The chairman said that he felt proud of the club. It was the first club in New Zealand and it had been a great success., Owing to the number of farmers taking an interest in Jersey cattle lhe anticipated a large increase in membership. On the motion of Mr. Buchanan the report and balance-sheet was adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

In vacating the chair Mr. Hall said that it was his firm belief that tne offices should go round, and especially, that of the president of the club. He thanked Mr. Dunlop and the members for. assisting him to make his

term of office as president so successful. President: In proposing Mr. E, J. Walters as president Mr. Hall said that gentleman had taken a keen interest in the affairs of the club from its inception. This was seconded by Mr. Buchanan. Mr. Hall was then proposed, but declined nomination, and Mr. Walters was unanimously elected president for the ensuing year. Vice-president, Mr G. Budhanan; secretary and treasurer, Mr V. Dunlop ; Executive, Messrs Hall, Buchanan, Veale, Crimmins, and Dean. VOTES OF THANKS. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Hall, and also tp Mr Dunlop. In proposing the vote of thanks to Mr Dunlop, the chairman said that Mr Dunlop had been an exceptionally good secretary, and one who took a keen interest in his work. NEW MEMBERS. Messrs J. Twohill and H. Dann, of Thames, were elected members. REMITS. The chairman announced that he had sent the remits decided upon at last meeting to a member of the Council, but (had not heard the result of the annual meeting held at Stratford on June 28. ' MEETINGS. It was decided to leave the matter of convening meetings in the hands of the chairman and secretary. DEMONSTRATIONS. It was resolved to write to Mr Watson inviting him to give a demonstration at Hikutaia an Ngatea, and to give a lecture in Paeroa in the evening. PHOTO ALBUM. On Mr Budhanan’s motion, seconded by Mr Dean, it .was decided to procure a photo album, members to have the right to insert photographs of their animals on payment pfi one shilling. In proposing the motion Mr Buchanan said that if. members would make use of the album it would keep a history of the club. ' ADVERTISING THE BREED. Mr Dean thought that something should be done in the nature of advertising the Jersey cattle, and suggested getting permission to place photographs of animals in a shop window.
