Mr. Costello at Ngatea yesterday claimed that he could inocculate a cow and the smell of. the inoccupation could lie noticed in the breath of the cow for 21 days afterwards. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is quoted in the American Press as saying that bell is only a. Hospital ward of heaven. This will be very disturbing news to a lot of people., says a writer in toe Dominion. Hell, it seems, is just a place for their own good, and they always hated things that were for their own good. It is also a little hard on Satan, for it makes his great revolt a mere squabble in a tea-cup, and instead of being tlhe monarch of the country of the damned turns him into a mere mayor of a suburb of Paradise. He revolted in good faith and was willing to take the consequences, and the present course of; events does not seem to bear out Sir Arthvr Conan Doyle’s theory of! flhe insignificance of the Devil —I am never certain whether “Hell” and "the Devil” ought to have capital letters or not, but. as tlhe old lady said, a little civility doesn’t cost anything. The idea of the Devil as an underling seems blasphemous, and, moreover, quite a lot of weld-in,formed people are convinced that the doctrine of “ self-determination for small nations ” was originated by the Devil himself, which, ifj so, cuts clean counter to the new theory.
