PLAINS CROPPING.
POSSIBILITIES FOR MAIZES Most of the maize planted on the Hauraki Plains during the last summer was for green feed, and Mr. T McClean, of Ngatea, like other farmers, planted his for a similar purpose. He, however, has picked from his crop a quantity of good-sized and healthy-looking cobs, and has them stored in a crib for fowl feed. Most of the cobs are large and well filled. Mr. McClean had several years’ fanning in the Bay of Plenty, which is considered, to be one of the chief maize growihg districts of the Dominion (especially round Whakatane and Opctiki), and he states that thte cobs he has stored in his crib are as good as any He had seen in the Bay of Plenty. This is, then, an indication of the possibilities of the Hauraki Plains for inaize growing. Mr. McClean intends, next year, tp grow some cob maize. It may be found that other farmers will do likewise, so as to demonstrate conclusively the possibilities of the Hauraki Plains as a maize-growing district.
