A social and euchre tournament, under the auspices of the Catholic Social Committee, will be held in the Central Theatre op Tuesday next, July 4. “There is not twehtylfive per cent of the land on the Hauraki Plains under production,” said Or. J. F. Mayn at the conference between the Lands Department officials and the Hauraki Plains County Council at Ngatea an Wednesday. The Rev. Fletcher, from Taupo, who is head of the Presbyterian Maori Mission, will preach this evening (Friday), and. also Sunday morning. He will visit Karangahake and Waikino on Sunday afternoon. Messrs. Harnett and Blundell have disposed of kheir bakery business to Messrs. Farrer and Parkes, and wish to thank all residents qf. Paeroa and surrounding districts for, the support that has been extended to them. It ws suggested by the chairman at thi conference between the Lands Department officials and the Hauraki Plains County Council at Ngatea oil Wednesday that the Council be given power to exempt certain lands fjroin county rates. Said the clerk: “.You think you will be exempt." 'TH have a try," replied the chairman.
At the last meeting of the Rotpkahu Ratepayers' Association, Mr W. D. Keys, secretary,, was instructed! to write to Mr McAlpine with a view to getting that gentleman to pay a visit to Paeroa to make an endeavour to form s. branch of New Zealand Farmers’ Union, embracing Paeroa and Rotokohu areas. Yesterday Mr Keys received word that both Mr McAlpine and Mr. Forbes Eadie, district organiser, will pay a visit to Paeroa on Saturday, July 8. A meeting of farmers and others interested in the formation of a branch has been convened by the Rotokohu Ratepayers’ Association flor Saturday evening, Bth July, in the County. Chambers. A special clearing sale of household furniture and effects is advertised to take place at Stansfield and Co.’s auction mart on Friday next, July 7. at 2 p.m. The whole of the superior household fiurniture of Messrs Harnett and Blundell will be offered. A list of some of the articles to be sold are advertised, and the goods can be seen a.t the mart any time next week. A sale is now on at “The Economic,” and everything is marked at greatly reduced prices. That the Hauraki Plains County would sooner or later be one of the most wealthy counties in the Dominion was a statement made by Cr. Harris at the conference between the Lands Department officials and the Hauraki Plains County Council at Ngatea on Wednesday. The chairman (Mr. W. H. Taylor) of the Paeroa District High School Committee, together W’ith Mr. A'. G. Garry, committeeman, and the head-, master, Mr. G. H. Taylor, were present at the social at Netherton on Wednesday night, held tp raise funds to assist in the establishment qf. a manual training, school in. Paeroa. The vhairman in a brief address explained the financial aspect of the matter, and the part that the local people had to take if they desired the manual training school to proceed. .The headmaster pointed oat the disabilities which existed at the present time, and the value it would be to Netherton children .and also to other outside districts. At the close of the function the chairman pf the Netherton Schoo] Committee (Mr. C. Potter) handed Mr. W. H. Taylor the sum of £8 9s to augment the fund, In responding Mr. Taylor said that he was pleased indeed with the ready response given, and. f e R sure that once the school was erected the Netherton people would, appreciate the great benefit that will, be derived from it by their children.
The death took place at Waikino on Sunday qf Mr. Phil. Anderson, an old resident of Waikino,- at. the age pf 46. Mr. Anderson (had been a great sufferer for over years. He leaves a widow and four young children to mourn their loss. The funeral took place at the Paeroa Cemetery on Monday afternoon. Mr. Anderson was a member of the Druids Lodge at Waikino, and the Lodge was well represented to pay their last respect to a Brother. The Arch-Druid, Bro. C. Phillips, read the Druids' Oration at the graveside. The Rev. F. B. Dobson, of Paeroa, officiated.
