ORCHARD WEST ROAD.

EXTENSION URGED. TO LINK UP TOREHAPE. The benefits to be derived from the extension of Orchard West road to’ the hills was brought before the Ngatea branch of the Farmers’ Union at its meeting on Saturday. Mr W. McDuff said some of the Torehape settlers had requested him to urge the Uniop to ask for the completion of the Orchard West road direct, to Torehape. The settlers were at present carting their, cream about 16 miles round by Kaihere, and it was costing them 1% per pound for cartage, while the direct road would bring them to within six or seven miles and cost them about %d per lb. He moved that the branch ask the Lands Department that the Orchard West road be completed to Torehape. Mr, A. J., Andrews thought the difficulty was that the proposed canal would have to be bridged and the dredge could not be brought out, Mr. McDuff thought the Department’s excuse was that the peat on the route was bottomless. Mr. L. Rowntree said it w'buld be at least 12 months before the dredge was up to the proposed road. Mr. W. G. Hayward suggested that the Torehape settlers, with representatives of the branch, meet the engineer. ' ■ This suggestion was put in the form of a motion, which was put to the meeting and carried.
