The proposal to urge the New Zealand Meat Packing and Bacon Co-operative Co., Ltd., to erect a bacon factory on the Hauraki Plains appears to be receiving the wholehearted support of the settlers on the Plains. A short time back the Ngatea branch of the Farmers’ Union decided to ask Mr. Baron, of the Bacon Company, to address a meeting of the branch, with a view to hearing the arguments in favour of such a factory being erected at Ngatea. Last week the Waitakaruru branch of the Farmers’ Union resolved to urge the Bacon Company to erect a faet<sry in some central portion of the Plains, while the opinion in Kerepeehi appears to be in favour of a factory being built. It is estimated that the factory, ii built, will be a sound paying proposition. The carting of the pigs from the Plains settlements to the Paeroa railway station must be enormous, while the shrinkage of the pigs in their long journey to either Te Aroha or Frankton is more money wasted. The Te Aroha factory can cope with only 200 pigs a week, and the Hauraki Plains supplies on an average about 300 a week, so that the Plains alone keeps the Te Aroha factory over-taxed and also helps with the supply to Frankton. What, then, can be said against the Plain’s having a factory of its own ? While discussing the possibilities of the erection of a bacon factory on the Plains there is sure to be some diversity of opinion in different parts as to the site. The Waitakaruru meeting specified no particular place as its choice. but “some central position.” This is undoubtedly the right attitude to adopt, and it is sincerely hoped that all other parts will look at the matter in the same light. There are only two places which at present claim to be the centre of the Plains—Ngatea and Kerepeehi-■ and it will probably be one of these places which will obtam the factory. Whichever place is chosen by the company all settlers, concerned should sink the spirit of parochialism and unite to make the proposed Hauraki Plains bacon factory a success.
