RESULTS AT A GLANCE. SENIOR. KOMATA 14, SUBURBS 6. WEST 8, NETHERTON 6. . PATETONGA 10, NGATEA 5. TURUA 6, WAITAKARURU 3. JUNIOR WEST 10, KOMATA 6. NETHERTON 12, SUBURBS 3. PATETONGA 15, NGATEA 4. WAITAKARURU 6, TURUA 0. THIRD GRADE. EAST 20, WEST 3. The Paeroa club championships were advanced another stage on Saturday. The results of these games make it very probable that Komata senior team and East junior team will win the championship in their respective grades. Although it is possible for Komata to lose, on their showing throughout the season this is not likely to happen. East juniors so far this season have not had thetr line crossed, and for another team to win the junior championship is not on the cards. In the third-grade contests the result is •still in doubt. Although the West team is leading on points the School team has showp improved form as the season advanced, and when they meet as opponents on the field the odds are in favour of a win for especially after the bad defeat West received at the hands of East on Saturday. KOMATA V. SUBURBS.
The match in the Domain was Komata v. Suburbs, and although scraggy at times it was a little better than usual from a spectator’s point of view. A strong northerly wind did not improve matters. There were alterations in both, teams, and the new players all did good work. Moore (Komata) tried to do too much, and on several occasions took the ball from other players when it was their ball, if Corbett had passed out to Cashmore more often instead of kicking Suburbs might have made the scores more even.
Suburbs, with the wind behind them, carried from the kick-off into Ko-nata’-s territory, Pitts later finding the line at the twenty-five flag from a penalty. From the throw-in Asher sent over and Komata forced. After loose play about Komata’s twenty-five A. Taylor kicked over near the corner and managed to fall on the ball, but it was out in touch. Asher marked the drop-out and set his tonwards going in a loose rush to Komata’s line, where Corbett was penalised. Suburbs from a scrum indulged in a passing rush, which was held up on the line, Komata eventually forcing. Just before the change-over, ip loose play in neutral territory, L. Benney picked up in the loose at half way and with a good run down the line, and after beating several men, scored a try in the corner. The kick was not converted, Komata 3, Suburbs 0.
Soon after the change-over G. Neil sent ever with a hard punt and Suburbs forced. A kicking bout ended with Moore m.arking in a good position, but he failed with his kick. A period of- loose play on Suburbs’ twenty-five line was terminated by the defenders being penalised. Moore did better this time with, his kick and made the scores Komata 6, Suburbs- 0. Komata returned to the attack, and it was not long before G. Royal carried the ball over the line, but he lost it before He couldjscore, and Suburbs forced. During, open play in mid-field Cashmore managed to send down to Komata’s line, but the latter immediately returned to the other twenty-five. A r ter a whito a kick towards the side-line bounced back infield and over Cashmore’s head. McNamara caught, .the ball on the bounce and ran over in the corner and round between the posts. Moore added two more points, making the scores Komata 11, Suburbs 0.
Afjter half-time Komata forwards went on the attack. Suburbs committed a breach, but Moore bad the wind to contend with and he failed with his kick. A lengthy period of open play and Suburbs’ backs got going from a scrum. The ball reached Cashmore about the twenty-five line, and with some pretty swerving Cashmore beat a number of opponents and scored a well deserved try in the corner. Corbett failed to convert. Komata. 11, Suburbs 3. Suburbs gained the advantage in mid field play, but Asher gave a badly judged kick and sent the ball over the dead-ball line. From the drop-out Suburbs had a drop-kick, but no gain resulted. When nearing the end of the round Kerr got possession and l sent down the field, and by following up was decidedly dangerous to Suburbs, but unfortunately he knocked on afjter getting a clear field. The final, round opened with forward play in mid-field.. Eventually Moore marked on Suburbs’ twentyfive, but failed to convert. Komata attacked strongly, but Suburbs held their ground. Pitts took advantage of a clearing and had a drop-kick, but the ball just went under the bar. Play then became very fast, the ball travelling up and down the field. Hill kicked the ball behind his own line when hard pushed, but in the race J. Penney showed too much pace for him and scored for Komata. Moore’s kick was not successful. Kopaata 14, Suburbs 3. Suburbs followed up the drop-out, and without a check carried over Komata’s line, Maloney scoring. The kick did not go over, and the game ended, Komata 14>, Suburbs 6. Mr. R. B, Penlington was referee. WEST V. NETHERTON.
West had a victory over Netherton, at Netherton, by 8 points to 5. W. White scored for West and Dean converted. Dean also kicked a penalty goal for West.
