There are many tales of the pluck and faithfulness of the wives of backblocks settlers, but her© is one of a woman's unrequitted heroism that stands apart (relates the "Wiararapa Age”). One day recently a man visited a certain Wairariapa township. He telephoned the farm of a returned soldier, whom he had known intimately in younger days. “Jack is in town, somewhere,” was tihie reply that camo over the wires from the fjarmer’r wife—another old friend. The visitor thereupon set about to find his pal. His horse and gig were discovered in a livery stables, but the attendant said they had been there three days! After further search the owner was brought to light in an out-of>-the u way place—hopelessly*, drunk. He was persuaded to go with bls friend, who, knowing provisions must be short at home, bought a supply of meat and bread. When theftiair arrived at the farm the good Samaritan was appalled to learn that during the debauched husband’s absence his wife and a. hired boy had milked between them 60 cows per day!
