LOCAL AND GENERAL.

On the motion of Mr. L. E. Cassrels at the Chamber of Commerce meeting an advertising committee was formed, consisting of Messrs. Hanna, Edwards, Couper, Cassrels, and Nicholas, Mr. Cassrels to be convener. The Wharepoa-Omahu War Memorial will be unveiled by Mr. Rhodes, M.P., at Whareppa on Sunday next, at 2.30 D.m. The application of. the School Committee for a grant of £5 towards the cost of purchasing gravel to form paths at the Tirohia school has been granted by the Education Board. At the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night the Rev. Etaticott thought that the Chamber should move in the matter oif. having a marketing day. Most places had one recognised day in the week, and why not Paeroa ? Some of the members thought that the matter should be taken up by the Paeroa Business Men’s Association. A plain and fancy dress ball is advertised to take place at Wharepoa on Thursday, July 6. Williams’ orchestra will be in attendance, and prizes will be given for the best fancy costume, both for ladies and gentlemen.

Tn proposing the motion that ths Chamber of Commerce institute a “Community Sing,” the mover, said, “You’re all looking glum after receiving your rate notices, and a little ‘sing’ might cheer you up.” Steps are being taken by the Thames Valley Electric Power Board to establish special telephonic communication between various points in the Board’s area for the purpose of transmitting direct advice as to the cause and duration of stoppages in the current. The telephone wires are being erected on the Board's poles between Hora Hora and Waikino, and between Waikino, Paeroa, Te Aroha Morrinsville, and Matamata. At the monthly meeting of, the Donbank Hostel Camera Club, Wellington, held on the Ist inst., Master Dave Leach recently of Paeroa, won the competition for the Dumbe.ll camera with a view taken of the Waitawheta Gorge. Master Leach was presented with the camera and highly praised for his excellent work. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night, on the motion of Mr. G. P. de Castro, it was resolved that the Chamber take steps to organise community singing, and that Messrs. Hanna. Edwards, Cassrels, and de Castro be a sub-committee to make the necessary arrangements. Special’ anniversary services will be held in the Methodist Church, on Sunday. The Rev. A. Mitchell, chairman of the District, will occupy the pulpit ’of the renovated Church, and will reopen the new Sunday School during the afternoon. Mr Mitchell will also sing during the services.

It will interest many of bur readers to learn that Mr. W. Russell, optician, who visited Paeroa a few years ago while on his tour of New Zealand as a teacher of optics, has opened a branch of his business at Auckland. Mr. Russell, it will be "remembered, was consulted professionally at Mr. Geo. P. de Castro’s pharmacy during his stay in Paeroa. It is a distinct gain io the people of Auckland province to have a man of. Mr. Russell’s professional attainments in business in their capital city. Since establishing himself in Palmerston North five years ago Mr. Russell has been so much sought after professionally that he novz has five branches of his business in the North Island. Mr. Russell aims to make Auckland his headquarters in future, which will be good news for the many friends he made while touring these parts ns a teacher. He is probably the oldest optician and pioneer of the profession ip New Zealand. It will be obvious to thoughtful folk that Mr. Russell is either an optimist of the first water, or .else he has something out of the ordinary to offer the public in the optical Way, because he has taken a lease of the rooms on the right-hand side of the vestibule, or entrance, to the palatial New Zealand Insurance Company’s buildings in Queen Street. As optical rooms they stand alone.

Messrs W. Fleming, and Son, engineers', Princes Street, Paeroa, have a replace advertisement in this issue to which we direct special attention. The Electric Power Board, it is stated, is about to erect poles along Pekapeka Road if a. sufficien’ number of settlers can be induced to have th? power connected with, their farms. The road between Morrinsville and Hamilton has been greatly improved lately. The Waikato County Council has deposited a large quantity of sand on the portion of the r,oad they govern, and when this sand settles down it makes an excellent surface. Strangely enough the worst portions of the road are to be found on the outskirts of. Hamilton and Morrinsville. So far no reply has been received by the Waihi Borough Council as to the place at which the Waihi. Beach assessment case will be 'heard. It would seem that for all practical purposes, more especially in view of the fact that the members of. the Court will have to inspect the beach property, that the hearing would be more convenient for the parties concerned if 1 held in Waihi. In the meantime, Hamilton has been suggested, but this suggestion finds no favour with the local authorities, who consider it would increase the expenses to all parties. Should the Court decide nnt to hold its sitting in Waihi, then Auckland, not Hamilton, would be far more preferable. Although July 27th was mentioned tentatively as the date for the sitting of the Court, it is not p.ow certain, owing to the great amount of work pressing upon the Supreme Court judges, that toe Waihi Beach case will be reached within that period. Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure, For Coughs and Colds, never fails.
