Keane had been referred to a special committee, Mr. Lowe (chairman) said the Borough Council had been a long time replying and did not seem very keen on a matter of such interest tp them. He thought the County Council should go right ahead with the project The clerk stated that he had advised Mr. Keane that the plant was ready for the trial, The Minister for Public Works, Hon. J. G. Coates, writing with regard to the proposed Kopu ferry scheme and candidates for the position of ferryman, stated that She had known Mr. Tony Keane lor ntany years, and was for 30 years running the Mitill ferry on the Wairpa River. He was looked upon as a most reliable man. The. Minister recommended Mr. Keane. Mr. Lowe said he was pleased to see the Minister’s testimonial, as it backed their selection of the right man. Cr. McCormick: I think he has a problem which will tax his abilities for some time. The Minister’s suggestion was adopted. Mr. Lowe said Mr, Keane was so confident that the ferry could be run that he would undertake to run it on a time-table, apd that if he failed he would donate £5O to the Hospital fund. Mr. Lowe suggested that the Council should draw up a time-table and give the ferry a fortnight’s trial. A Councillor: How about giving it a trial before you draw up a timetable. Mr. Lowe : No; I think we should draw up a time-table first. T,he matter was left to the two riding members and the chairman, with power to act. A report by the foreman of works stated that the ferry punt had to be recaulked and new planking put on the bottom. Silt .and mud had also to be cleaned out. A lot more had to be done to the punt than what was expected, it being strained and broken in several places.
