That there is a widespread disaffection among the people of the Hauraki Plains in connection with the tactics of the Thames business people is realised by our contemporary, which is of the opinion that the disaffection has been caused by personal propaganda. We admit that there is a great deal of dissatisfaction with the lax methods of the Pollen Street businessmen in connection with the Plains trade, and that recently there has been a growing sympathy towards Paeroa, but have the Paeroa businessmen shown any great initiative in an endeavour to capture the Plains trade beyond the institution of the motor service and a regular daily mail ? Perhaps in an isolated case or two the answer could be “ yes,” but do the others realise what our contemporary has discovered ? It is agreed that the Hauraki Plains trade must go to either Paeroa or Thames. In the past most of it .has gone to Thames, but recently Paeroa has been receiving a larger share. The institution of the motor services, and the consequent growing sympathy, and the deeper interest being taken in Paeroa affairs, is attracting some of the trade, but not the large amount which with a little effort could be drawn that way. Paeroa has a central position, but its neighbour, Thames, is also easily accessible, and the Paeroa people must bestir themselves a little more or they cannot hope to compete with Thames. There are one or two Paeroa firms which have paved the way, aud it is understood that one of them intends establishing a depot at Ngatea. Perhaps they all cannot establish branches at the different centres, but they can cater more for the Plains needs than they are doing at present, and now is the time to act. What better opportunity could there be especially when there is at least a suspicion of prejudice against Thames. The Thames people send representatives to canvass for trade. Why cannot the Paeroa businessmen do the same ? There is business awaiting them on the Plains if they will only look for it, and not wait for the trade to go to them.
