WAITAKARURU. SCHOOL FLAGdSTAFF. The Wiatakaruru ■school flag-staff was erected last Friday. The staff was brought from Thames by -he foreman of the Thames Harbour Board, Mr. Stone, who supervised the erection by a working bee comprised of Messrs. Harris, Caie, and Hunter (school committeemen). Tne staff is a 40f-t pipe, and stands about 37ft out of; the ground, and is fitted with lanyards and c.leates. The p>pe js four inches at the base, three inches higher up. and two inches at the top. THS CANAL ROAD. The Lands Department’s tractor and grader arrived at Waitakaruru on Monday to grade both sides of the canal. It is important that a road be formed on the eastern side of the canal, as there are four or five soldier settlers on that side with no connection with the township except a dinghy, which is used as a ferry across the canal. The footpath along the Canal Road has recently been shelled hy the Department. MARAMARUA ROAD. The county grader and tractor arc expected at Waitakaruru to-day to grade the road from Hailey’s corner towards Maramarua. TURUA. SALE OF WORK. An organisation of young people >n connection wi,th St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Turua, held a successful sale of work.in the Victoria Hall on Siaturday afternoon for the mission funds. There was a good attendance, and the sale realised about £l2. Master Davies, who opened the function, explained the objects of the sale and what it was hoped to achieve. The sale was conducted in an admirable manner. There were vegetable, sweets, and sewing stalls, all well stocked. Of course there were the usual guessing and various other competitions for the young folk. The fol’awing are the results: Dancing Competition for boys, Master Cresswe’l; patching competition for girls, A. Williams ; baking competition for hoys (sponge cake), Master Davies. NETHERTON. THE PEKAPEKA ROAD. The county engineer, Mr. J, Higgins, and Cr. Harris met a number of Pekapeka Road settlers yesterday lo discuss the advisability or otherwise of forming, with, a view to metalling, that road before the spring. The settlers expressed their desire to have the work commenced immediately, and it was decided to accede to that request.
