THE RAINFALL.
The past month has been a comparatively dry one, in comparison with the wet months of January, February, and March. The rainfall for last month (gauged at. the Lands Department’s office at Kerepeehi) was 267 in. which fell pn eight days throughout the month. There were 23 fine days. The heaviest falls were on the '27th, when .91in was gauged; and or. the 9th, when .84in was recorded. Compared with the same period in other years the rainfall this May is be.’ow the average. The following are the records for the month of May of the previous years : 1913, 3.4 in ; 1914, 3.94 in ; 1915, 2.5 in ; 1916, 4.75 in ; 1917, 4 90in ; 1918. 2.24 in ; 1919, 3 06in ; 1920, 3 55; 1921, 3.63 in. The average fall for the month of May is, therefore, about 3 J /£in, and the fall for May, 1922, is well below that average. So far this month exactly two inches of rain have fallen. Of this 1 54in fell on Friday night and. early Saturday morning. The total rainfall for the first flv? months o' the year (to May 31) is 21 39in, and to date. 23.39 in.
